Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

By: Lantana Grace Church | June 01, 2017

The Gospel of God's grace in Christ Jesus is not a thing to be proved, but a truth to be believed. It is not submitted to our reasoning powers as a subject for critical examination. The Gospel is a message from God, addressed to the conscience, feelings, and affections. For this reason men fond of argument and proving everything by strictly logical deduction generally make very poor preachers. In the Scriptures, God does not argue. He proclaims!

In order to get to Heaven we must be as good as God, perfect in all things, perfect in heart, perfect in thought, perfect in works, perfectly holy. But no person is perfect. We are all sinful. We are all corrupt. Is there no hope for us? Must we all perish in our sins in an eternal Hell? NO! Blessed be the Lord our God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has made a way to make fallen, sinful, depraved sinners perfect, perfectly holy, and perfectly accepted. Every person who is in Christ is perfect in Him and will be presented to the Father in that last day, "Holy and unblameable and unreproveable in His sight." This is the final result of Christ’s redeeming work. It is not the result of anything in us, or anything done by us. ...

God does not say "when I see your faith," or "when I see your believing," or "when I see your experience," or "when I see your baptism," or "when I see your graces," but "When I see the blood, I will pass over you" (Exodus 12:13).

All that God has done for us and is doing for us, ought to encourage us to remember that He will continue to do for us, and that should stop all complaining.

We need to be continually reminded that our life is but a vapor, which appeareth for a little while and then vanisheth away. If not we will walk carelessly. We will let worldliness eat away at us like a cancer. This is not our rest, so we should take no comfort in it. Nothing of this world is worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. We must trim our lamps for the time when the Bridegroom comes. We are told to stand always ready, waiting for the appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, or for the call that it is time for the body to return to the earth.

George Whitfield used to say when he went to bed at night, "I have not left even a pair of gloves out of their place: if I die tonight, all my affairs, f...

So many times we try to love God for what He does, and we ought to, but this love is dependent upon our understanding to know when God is doing something for us. There are times when we feel as though we are forsaken of God. We have no visible means to guide us in our love. That is when by faith that we carry on and love Him for what He is. "He is good." This is the basis of our love. If all the graces were to stop now and we had eternity to continue to love Him for what He has already done for us, we can never love God as much as He deserves.

(Psalms 86:1) "Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy."

When God hears our prayers it is said that He bows down his ear to them, for He condescends and is pleased to take notice of such vile common creatures as us, to hear such defective prayers as ours.

This matter of church membership is often seriously abused. The word CHURCH is assembly, and the word MEMBERSHIP is to be a part of that assembly. It is more than having your name on a church roll. Some have their names on a church roll for family’s sake, some for tradition’s sake, and some for denomination’s sake. Many of these never support the church. It is not New Testament Membership to have your name in one place, and to attend in another. Some have their name on the roll and do not attend for months at a time. No one ever hears from them. Then one day they just show up.

Read Acts 2:41-47 and notice the words "added unto them" "continued stedfastly" "together" "common" "one accord" ...

During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I there was a law made that everybody should go to his parish church; but many hated to go and hear Protestant doctrine. Because of fear of persecution, they went, but they filled their ears with wool, so that they could not hear.

Many come to church this way each week. They fear their false refuges will be destroyed, so they stop their ears so as not to hear.

We know that what Christ did for us is accepted by His Father, because His Father appointed Him to be our Saviour from before the foundation of the world. God Himself chose Christ to be the Redeemer. He set Him apart, and He laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Had there been one sin in Christ, He could not have been our Saviour. But He was without spot or blemish – without sin. "In Him was no sin." When the innocent lamb was put to death, by the head of the household, he knew this lamb was not dying because of any sin of its own. We deserve to die. Sin had no claim on Him. He died "the just for the unjust, to bring us to God."

(Psalms 83:1-3) "Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones."

What is done is not against Israel, but against the Israel of God, so against the God of Israel. They are not our enemies, but Thine enemies. They hate God – they hate those who worship God – because they hate God's Gospel. They have taken counsel against thy hidden ones – those hidden in Christ. Our life is hid with Christ in God.

Those who halt between two opinions know just enough of God’s Word that you cannot enjoy the things of this world, and have just enough of this world that you can find no peace in the promises of God’s Word. You have the fears of the Word, without its hopes. You have the duties of the Word, without its joys. You have to act like godly people act, but there is no heart in it. You have to sit at the table spread with the bread of life, but cannot eat it. You get among the saints and try talk like they do and you sound like someone trying to speak a foreign language he learned from a book.

In Psalm 71:17, David spoke these words, "Forsake me not till I have showed thy strength unto this generation and thy power to every one that is to come."  Though we can look at these words as spoken concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, yet they were spoken of David and every saint of God.  When John Newton was too old and weak to walk up into his pulpit, they carried him.  His friends told him he should quit preaching because of his weakness, but he said, "What?  Shall the old African blasphemer ever leave off preaching the grace of his Master as long as there is breath in his body?  No, never."

Regarding the great cause of God in this world, we must expect to meet with many slanders, many hardships, and many defeats. All through history, "all that live godly in Christ Jesus suffer persecution." Read the lives of the great preachers of this Gospel, such as Luther, Calvin, Whitfield, Edwards, and all the others. They all suffered for the cause of Christ. But, Christ will win the day. Never be discouraged, but go to the throne of grace more earnestly, and ask for grace to keep you, and strengthen you, for the battle.

Christ’s death is not a pattern but a payment. His death is not an example but an atonement. His death does not revive us but it redeems us. Our problem is with the Law and with the Holy Justice of God, and we cannot go free until someone pays that sin debt before a Holy God. Now God can receive us and pardon us because the Lord Jesus Christ paid our sin debt to whom it was owed. God set the price and Christ paid it.

The best praying in the world is pleading God's promises. If we pray without a promise found in God's Word, we have no reason to expect an answer. God will do what He has promised to do – He may do more, but we have no right to expect it.

If our hope lies in us, or in what we do, it is a delusion. If our hope lies in this church it is a lie. If our hope stands with one foot on the work of Christ and the other foot on our own merits, it will fail us. Hope in Christ is the only hope which can be acceptable to God. Our only hope of Heaven will be through Christ alone. Here our hope begins, and here our hope ends.

"The LORD bless thee."That which makes this blessing precious is that it is the blessing from Jehovah. There is no limit to the goodwill of the infinite merciful One. When Jehovah blesses, it is after the manner of His sovereign Almightiness.
"And keep thee."When God keeps us, who can be against us?
"The Lord make his face to shine upon thee."Nothing can shine like that.
"And be gracious unto thee."This is the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
"The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee."This is to be approved, accepted, favored by God.
"And give thee peace."This is that "peace of God which passeth all understanding."

The Lord blesses His people "according to the riches of his glory by Christ Jesus."

One mark of the children of God is that they love one another, and they love to associate with each other. That is why we have churches. Christ’s sheep do not like to wander alone; they love company. Some professors claim to get on best by themselves. But God's people love fellowship. "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren."
