Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

Much of today’s preaching has to do with making Christ our savior. If God is pleased to save us, it will be God the Father who made Him our Saviour. It is God who made Christ to be our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption (I Corinthians 1:30). I do not make Christ to be anything: however God the Father made Him to be everything to His people; Christ is our all in all by the power and purpose of God (Colossians 3:11).

Some years ago I was questioned by a group of men at a certain church looking for a pastor. They asked me if I preached messages against abortion. I replied, “Christ is my message.” They replied, “We know that.” Again they asked, “Do you preach messages against rock and roll.” I replied, Christ is my message, they replied, “We know that.” I then replied, “We can get women to quit having abortions, we can get our young people (and older) to quit listening to rock and roll and they will still end up in hell. Only Christ can save sinners from their sins, from the guilt of them, from the reigning power of them, from the condemning power of them. “Give me Christ or else I die.”

The sin of Lot’s wife was looking back. Her heart was still in Sodom and Gomorra. The believer’s heart is to always be looking to Christ, always pressing forward toward the mark; and Christ is that mark we press forward to (Philippians 3:14). We do not look with desire to go back as the children of Israel did so many times when trouble came. But we keep moving forward till we reach home. “And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward” (Exodus 14:15).

Prayer is not just saying some words, some prayers cannot even be uttered with words but groans. Prayer is an attitude, it is communion with God all day, every day.

John Chapman

“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for
this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (I Thessolonians 5:16-18).
