Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.” (Jude 1:20-21)

Someone asked, “How can I avoid these times of depression, indifference and bad attitude toward others?”

First, there is no perfection in the flesh! While we do not approve of our infirmities, failures, evil thoughts, or backslidings, we are, nevertheless, aware of their source: the flesh. And, because of that, we are also aware of the fact that this conflict and warfare will be with us until death. However, the next time you are plagues with coldness of spirit, prolonged bad attitude, and a worldly spirit, check and see if you are not...

"Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith." (Hebrews 10:22)

Assurance of salvation and a saving interest in our Lord Jesus is not a feeling cultivated by thinking good thoughts and doing good deeds. Paul calls it "full assurance of faith." It has to do with faith, with believing God!

Assurance is born of confidence in the Father as our covenant God; "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him."

Assurance is born of confidence in the Son as our just God and Saviour; "By His stripes we are healed."

Assurance is born of confidence in His promises; "Abraham was fully persuaded that what God had promised, He was able also to perform."

So your assurance of redemption is not enh...

"Lord, what will you have me to do?" (Acts 9:6). This is Paul's question on the road where he met the sovereign Christ. It was not, what do I think is best for me? Or what will afford me the most pleasure and comfort? Or even what do other people do? But "Lord, what will YOU have me to do?"

In every case enable me, by Thy grace, to do what is pleasing in Thy sight and that which will bring glory to Thy name. Where we get in trouble is putting our wills and ways before His! It is not I but Christ, His gospel, His church, His kingdom, His glory, which must be considered. When this is settled "I" will fall in the right place and though the way may not be easy; in the end it will be pleasant. "In all thy ways a...

"Go home to thy friends and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee" (Mark 5:19). The Lord had shown great mercy to this poor sinner, setting him free from demons and from sin. Now He tells him to go home to his family and friends and be The Lord’s Witness.

Do not go home and begin to preach. Do not go home and take up the great doctrines of grace and expound them. Do not go home and strive to bring everyone to your views and beliefs. Do not go home and condemn all who do not see what you see. Go home and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you! Not what great things you have read or heard, but what great things you have experienced! This is the way to begin our witnessing.

There never is a more in...

T. T. Martin (pastor, missionary, and writer of the last century [1862-1939]) once said, “There aren’t many great sermons preached today. Preachers are bound by too many other things to be great preachers. They give more advice than a lawyer, visit more sick than a doctor, attend more meetings than a club-woman, shake more hands than a politician, teach more people than a professor, and use the other part of their time as errand boys. They are organizers, promoters, executives, and toast-masters – anything but prophets speaking for God to eternity-bound sinners. Preachers today are like the little boy, loaded down with books, who was asked, 'Son, where are you going?' ... 'I’m going to school.' 'What are you learning?' ... 'Nothing, I’m too...

“For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (II Corinthians 6:2).

It is one thing to "wait on the Lord” (Psalm 27:14) in matters of providence, trial, and decisions regarding our plans and purposes. But the command to repent and believe on Christ is in the imperative! It is "NOW is the accepted time, TODAY is the day of salvation." Someone may say, "But I want to be sure." You can be sure that you are a guilty sinner, that you have no ability to justify yourself before God, that God sent His Son to save, that He is a sufficient Saviour, and that not to believe this gospel is to make ...

In our latter years . . . there is a keener sense of sin! Older believers are more aware of the NATURE of sin than the acts and deeds of sin. Attitude and spirit occupy the mind more than the acts and deeds.

In our latter years . . . our prayers begin to change. There is less asking and more thanksgiving . . . less petition and more praise. We do, however, ask things for our children, but our needs are different than theirs.

In our latter years . . . there is a clearer understanding of the FRAILTY OF LIFE. It is more difficult to think of death when we are young, but when this flesh begins to crumble and the keepers of the house tremble, the strong men bow themselves, we begin to think more and more of our house not made with hands.

I Corinthians 15:10 - "But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me."

"By the grace of God I am what I am." If I am elect, my election is of grace. If I am redeemed my redemption is of grace. If I am called, I am called by grace. If I am preserved, I am preserved by grace. Whatever there is in me that is acceptable or gives my soul any comfort, must be all of grace and grace alone.

John Newton used to say that, “For a believer in sovereign grace to be proud was the most inconsistent thing in the world. By his own profession he is what he is, knows what he knows, and has what h...

There is nothing more comforting to believers than God’s sovereignty over all things. Under the most adverse circumstances, in the most severe trials, we believe that God has ordained our afflictions, that God overrules them, and that God will sanctify them for our good and His glory. There is nothing for which we ought to contend more earnestly than the truth of God’s rule and reign over all things, all creatures, and all their actions. The throne of God, His right to sit on that throne and to do with His own as He will, is what we believe and what we preach. Let us be accused of over-emphasizing the majesty and power of the living God, but never let it be said that we underestimate His glory.

Having religion is one thing, but knowing and walking with Christ is different! Having religion – the world understands and tolerates. But free grace – the world neither understands, nor tolerates! Any two religious errors can walk together, and permit them both to exist! But the truth of God's grace cannot exist with error – for one always must go!

We will never hear the gospel of God until we are blessed with some preachers who "care not!" Who care not what men say, who care not what men pay, who care not for tradition, who care not for position, but who only care for the glory of Christ.

That God is able, in His mercy, grace, and wisdom, to make a way for our sins to be laid on a Substitute and the guilty sinner to go free is the greatest glory of His nature that He has seen fit to reveal.

Modern day evangelism (so-called) says to any and all it approaches, God loves you and Christ died for you. But none of the prophets nor any of the apostles addressed people in this way. The starting point of true evangelism is to acquaint men with the holy and sovereign character of God. This is the "beginning of wisdom", which is able to make a man wise unto salvation; for THE FEAR OF THE LORD brings men to true repentance and faith.

I suppose that the most difficult thing any believer has to learn is that “Without Him we can do nothing.” This is our creed but not our experience! We will never be effectually used for God’s true glory until it becomes our experience. God will never use men that are proud enough to think themselves necessary or capable. He will throw away the vessel which begins to boast in itself or allows others to boast in it. Whatever is our strength in the flesh is sure to become our weakness in the spirit – whether it be our intelligence, our morality, our length of service, our doctrine, our courage or whatever. Gideon feared the Midianites because of the small number of his soldiers, but the Lord said, “Your soldiers are yet too many for me.” I wo...

Have you ever slipped on ice? Before you hit the ground, you know you are in for a painful fall, and there is not one thing you can do to prevent it. Have you ever felt like you slipped and fell into sin? It happens so quickly, and you could feel yourself falling? David said, “When I said, my foot slippeth: thy mercy O Lord, held me up” (Psalm 94:18). What a blessing of grace. When the believer’s foot slips, we fall into the hands of mercy!

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” What a promise! What a glorious inheritance! What a blessed comfort! Walk in it, believer; lie down upon it; trust in it; rest upon it; it will do for all the days of your life and be a soft pillow for your death!

I believe that all who come to our Redeemer in saving faith do so personally. I wish that I could believe God for my family, but unless a man in his own heart believes on Christ, he will perish. Those who come to Christ will come sincerely. A man is not only persuaded that Christ is the way, but in his heart he lovingly and sincerely agrees with God’s terms of salvation. “My son, give me thine heart” (Proverbs 23:26). It is the heart or nothing in this heavenly marriage. Also, those who come to Christ do so rationally, in knowledge and understanding. They know what He saved them from – sin’s curse and condemnation. They know who saved them – our Lord Jesus Christ, the God-man. They know how He saved them – by His perfect obedience and preci...

All religious reformers and messiahs come to live; Christ came to die. All others leave monuments and memorials: no one can find His birthplace, grave, nor one possession. All others write diaries and memoirs; He wrote on the sand. All others choose their followers from the rich, powerful, and influential; He chose the poor and needy. All others praise human righteousness; He condemned it. All others seek those who can help them; He sought those whom He could help. All others promise success and happiness to their followers; He promised tribulation and suffering. All others held their disciples with fear and force; He invited His to leave Him if they would. All others have palaces, mansions, and headquarters; He had no place to lay His head...

“To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not tiresome, but for you it is safe” (necessary) (Philippians 3:1). We never grow weary of preaching the Word of our Lord, the Gospel of His grace; and we never tire of gathering together in His name to worship, pray, and fellowship with His people. The old story is forever NEW; and the familiar Scriptures are fresher and sweeter with every taste.

  1. To often hear His Word preached is to keep our hearts and minds on Christ, the fountain of life.
  2. To often hear His Word preached is a safeguard against false doctrine and false teachers. An untaught child is more easily led astray than one “taught of God.”
  3. To often hear His Word preached guards against self-righteousness. There is little danger of a...

“I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.” Psalm 122:1

I can and do worship the Lord anywhere; I can pray and rejoice in God’s mercy in Christ anywhere; I can read the Word and meditate upon His grace anywhere; but there is a time and a place (referred to as the house of God) where people of God gather in His name each week to worship, pray, preach His Word, and encourage one another. He promised to be in their midst. They meet to seek His face, His blessings, and to hear the Word He has given His servant for them at that time. They also come with children to be identified individually and as families with the Lord and His Kingdom. They come to praise Him in joy and seek His comfort in their sorrows. For all t...
