I see no reason to contradict and fuss with that professing Christian who insists that Christ has done no more for him than he did for Judas. Maybe the poor man is right. How can you contradict him if he is telling you the truth? I just take him at his word and leave it at that. But don’t imagine that Peter believed Christ did no more for him than he did for Judas. Both men had horrible falls into sin. One betrayed Christ and the other denied him. Christ left Judas to die in his sin and go to his own place – to hell. Christ made intercession for Peter and delivered him from what otherwise would have been a damnable fall. Ask Peter if Christ did more for him than he did for Judas. A dear friend and I were talking about how blessed the gospel of Christ's grace was. I can't remember all the details we talked about. I suppose we talked about electing love and redeeming grace and how the Lord in tender mercy called us out of darkness with a call we could not resist, and has kept us till that very day, and refused to let us go. When saints get to talking about spiritual things they often talk about such subjects as these. When our discussion was almost over, my dear friend put the icing on the cake, as it were. "And one of the best things about this gospel," he said, "I can't mess it up!".

One of the most dreadful things I have ever witnessed was talking to an ungodly man just a few hours before he died. I asked him if he was afraid. His answer to me was, “No.” He died a few hours later with a calm conscience. This poor soul was on the very verge of eternity without one ounce of a God given hope and yet his conscience was calm.

What God refuses to do for some men here, that is, to awaken the conscience out of it’s gross ignorance, He will suffer the torments of hell to do yonder. The rich man fared sumptuously every day and may well have lived with a calm conscience - and died with one too. But as soon as the flame of hell touched him he knew he was in trouble. That poor man I was talking to, I fear, suffered the same fat...
