Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

There is not a living sinner who would not like to be delivered from torment in Hell, but apart from Grace, he does not want to be delivered from his sins which he loves and in which he has pleasure. His desire for deliverance is not from his sins, but from physical torture.

Matthew 26:14-15 “Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, and said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him (Jesus) unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.”

Ever since he “betrayed innocent blood” (Matthew 27: 3, 4), selling the Lord Jesus to the highest bidder, the name Judas has been a byword, symbolic of the worst form of treachery and deceit known to man. However, though he stands out in history as unique and his crime the most sinister, his sin is still among us.

Passing through a country graveyard the other day, an inscription on a head-stone struck my eye. The stone was by the side of the path, where everyone could see it, and it was placed there in memory of a young man who died at the age of seventeen. It was:

Reader, one moment,– Stop, and think:
That I am in eternity! – And you are on the brink!

“Thou hatest all workers of iniquity.” Psalm 5:5

The god which the vast majority of professing Christians 'love' is looked upon very much like an indulgent old man, who Himself has no relish for folly, but leniently winks at sin. Yet for one sin the fallen angels were thrown out of Heaven, our first parents were banished from  Eden,  Moses was excluded from the promised land,  Elisha's servant smitten with leprosy, and Ananias and Sapphira were cut off from the land of the living.

But men refuse to believe in this God, and gnash their teeth when his hatred of sin is faithfully pressed upon their attention.

Sinful man was no more likely to devise a holy God, than to create the Lake of Fire in which he will be tormented forever and ever!

Scripture plainly declares it and we know from experience that man is an utterly depraved, wicked, filthy, sinful and vile creature. We call it the doctrine of depravity. But it is a mild sounding word to describe the utter wretchedness of mankind.

One illustration will suffice to describe mankind as he really is. When the altogether lovely Son of the most high God; the Creator, Owner, Provider, Savior and Lord of all creatures; the holy, righteous, loving, merciful, gracious, tender, kind, longsuffering, patient, compassionate, pure and sinless Son of God . . . came to this earth . . . mankind despised Him, rejected Him, hated Him, abused Him, mocked Him, tortured Him and killed Him.

Depravity? Is man utterly depraved? Put up a sign… YARD SA...
