Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

By: Lantana Grace Church | June 01, 2017

The Gospel of God's grace in Christ Jesus is not a thing to be proved, but a truth to be believed. It is not submitted to our reasoning powers as a subject for critical examination. The Gospel is a message from God, addressed to the conscience, feelings, and affections. For this reason men fond of argument and proving everything by strictly logical deduction generally make very poor preachers. In the Scriptures, God does not argue. He proclaims!

"Go home to thy friends and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee" (Mark 5:19). The Lord had shown great mercy to this poor sinner, setting him free from demons and from sin. Now He tells him to go home to his family and friends and be The Lord’s Witness.

Do not go home and begin to preach. Do not go home and take up the great doctrines of grace and expound them. Do not go home and strive to bring everyone to your views and beliefs. Do not go home and condemn all who do not see what you see. Go home and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you! Not what great things you have read or heard, but what great things you have experienced! This is the way to begin our witnessing.

There never is a more in...

T. T. Martin (pastor, missionary, and writer of the last century [1862-1939]) once said, “There aren’t many great sermons preached today. Preachers are bound by too many other things to be great preachers. They give more advice than a lawyer, visit more sick than a doctor, attend more meetings than a club-woman, shake more hands than a politician, teach more people than a professor, and use the other part of their time as errand boys. They are organizers, promoters, executives, and toast-masters – anything but prophets speaking for God to eternity-bound sinners. Preachers today are like the little boy, loaded down with books, who was asked, 'Son, where are you going?' ... 'I’m going to school.' 'What are you learning?' ... 'Nothing, I’m too...

Over two thousand years ago, the Captain of our Salvation appeared to his disciples on Mt. Olivet for the last time: “and he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned’ (Mark 16:15-16). And that great commission from our ‘Commander In Chief’ will remain in force until He returns. I pray that he gives me grace to obey it.

Most preachers of our day present the Gospel as an offer by God that the sinner can accept or reject. I have at least three problems with this. (1) The Bible does not teach this. (2) It puts salvation ultimately in the hands of man, therefore salvation is at least partly by works. (3) It denies the depravity of man by implying some capability in man to make use of the benefit offered. Where the Gospel is preached as an offer, THE GOSPEL is not preached.

We will never hear the gospel of God until we are blessed with some preachers who "care not!" Who care not what men say, who care not what men pay, who care not for tradition, who care not for position, but who only care for the glory of Christ.

I do not believe we can preach the gospel if we do not preach justification by faith, without works; nor unless we preach the sovereignty of God in His dispensation of grace; nor unless we exalt the electing, unchangeable, eternal, immutable, conquering love of Jehovah. Nor do I think we can preach the gospel unless we base it upon the special and particular redemption of His elect and chosen people which Christ wrought out upon the cross. Nor can I comprehend a gospel which lets saints fall away after they are called, and suffers the children of God to be burned in the fires of damnation after having once believed in Jesus. Such a gospel I abhor.

This is the one thing I crave. Oh, that God would save souls! I say to myself, after being badgered and worried through the week by the men of modern thought: “I will go my way and preach Christ’s gospel, and win souls.” One lifting up of Jesus Christ crucified is more to me than all the cavillings of the men who are wise above what is written. Converts are our unanswerable arguments. “Happy is the man,” saith the Psalm, “that hath his quiver full of them: they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” Blessed is the man who has many spiritual children born to God under his ministry; for his converts are his defense. "And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it" (Acts 4:14).

The most humbling and challenging thing that I face…the great concern of my heart…is that my generation experience a return to the preaching of the gospel of God’s grace. This generation is plagued with a gospel of works and are strangers to the gospel of redemption. I want a return to the message used of God in other days to awaken men to their need and to reveal the grace and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. Rolph Barnard used to say, “The twofold message of grace is: (1) All flesh is grass! and (2) Behold your God!” This is the message that takes away all of the glory and dignity of the flesh and proclaims the redemptive glory of Christ. The results of this message will be a sense of the awesome holiness of God, the inability and sinfulne...

Blessed is the preacher who can shut men up to free and sovereign grace and yet lovingly, sincerely invite all men to look to Christ and be saved. Blessed is the preacher who knows that “salvation is of the Lord”, who has the patience to wait upon the Lord to regenerate, awaken, and call his hearers; yet he prays for their deliverance, urges them to close with Christ, and beseeches them to “be reconciled to God.” Blessed is the preacher who can preach with equal force and confidence both the preservation and the perseverance of believers. He will not “turn away from us and we will not depart from Him.” Blessed is the preacher who can rejoice in imputed righteousness; “with His holy garments on, I am as spotless as His dear Son”; and yet, al...

As far as I can find by all I converse with, they place religion in being of the Protestant or Roman Catholic communion, and are quite ignorant of the nature of inward purity and holiness of heart. Lord, the Christian world is cast into a deep sleep; send forth, I beseech Thee, some faithful and true pastors to awaken them out of it.

When Pharaoh exalted Joseph to be ruler over Egypt, he made several decrees concerning Joseph, but his instructions to the people were only two. The first was, “Bow the knee” (Genesis 41:43). Next, when the people were in need, he instructed them to “Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do” (Genesis 41:55). Those who would preach the Gospel of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ must strictly adhere to both the content and the order of these decrees. We tell men first of the majesty of His Person, His Lordship and Sovereignty. Should anyone be in need, we direct them to Him, for He alone can save and that by the power of His Word.

"Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save." - Isaiah 63:1

This that is commonly called Calvinistic doctrine, it is none other than Christian doctrine, the doctrine of the holy Bible, for despite that it is now called Calvinism, it could not be so called in Augustine's days; and yet in Augustine's works you find the very same things. And it is not to be called Augustinism, it is to be found in the writings of the apostle Paul. And yet it was not called Paulism, simple for this reason, that it is the expansion, the fullness of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. To repeat what we ...

I have many a time had doubts and fears, as most of you have had – and where is the strong believer that has not sometimes wavered? I have said, within myself "Is this religion true, which, day after day, I incessantly preach to the people? Is it the correct one? Is it true that this religion has an influence upon mankind?" And I will tell you how I have reassured myself. I have looked upon the hundreds, nay, upon the thousands whom I have around me, who were once the vilest of the vile – drunkards, swearers and such like – and I now see them clothed and in their right mind, walking in holiness and in the fear of God; and I have said, within myself, "This must be the truth, then, because I see its marvellous effects. It is tr...

In Psalm 71:17, David spoke these words, "Forsake me not till I have showed thy strength unto this generation and thy power to every one that is to come."  Though we can look at these words as spoken concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, yet they were spoken of David and every saint of God.  When John Newton was too old and weak to walk up into his pulpit, they carried him.  His friends told him he should quit preaching because of his weakness, but he said, "What?  Shall the old African blasphemer ever leave off preaching the grace of his Master as long as there is breath in his body?  No, never."

My God, I groan day-by-day over the salvation of souls. Sometimes I think I could stand on the top of every hackney-coach in the streets of London, to preach God’s Word. It is not enough that I can do it night and day, laboring incessantly by writing and by preaching, I would that I were multiplied a thousand-fold, that I might have a thousand tongues to preach this gospel of my blessed Redeemer.

I saw my dear brother, Archibald Brown, this week, and he told me of a poor fellow in East London who had been visited by a soul-winning brother. He had been a wild and wicked man. He was ill, and the visitor talked long with him. It seemed to make no impression, till one day he explained substitution to him, and the man asked pointedly, "If I believe in Jesus, do you tell me that he took all my sins upon himself?" "Yes, he bore all your sins in his own body on the tree." "Well, well," the man cried, "if he took them, I have not got them." "No," said the other; "that is the glorious truth. The Lord suffered for your sins." "Then I shall not have to suffer for them?" "...

Ministers of Christ especially should give themselves, not to the serving of tables, but to the ministry of the word and to prayer. For us to give ourselves to getting up entertainments, to become competitors with theatres and music-halls, is a great degradation of our holy office… for God's watchmen to become the world's showmen is a miserable business. God keep all of us who are ministers of Christ from entangling ourselves with the things of this life!
