Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

We measure distance by time. We are apt to say that a certain place is so many hours from us. If it is a hundred miles off, and there is no railroad, we think it a long way; if there is a railway, we think we can be there in no time. But how near must we say heaven is? — for it is just one sigh, and we get there. Why, our departed friends are only in the upper room, as it were, of the same house. They have not gone far off; they are upstairs, and we are down below.

I went to bury one of the holiest men I ever knew, and, I may add, the happiest man I ever saw in all my life. He fell asleep at a good old age, but as I stood by his bedside often in his last illness I envied him. Covered from head to foot, as he said, with the boils of Job, and the sores of Lazarus in one, with all his bones aching as though they were out of joint, yet he said to me, "What a happy thing it is to be here"; and I said, "What a happy thing to be upon a dying bed!" "Yes," said he, "for I am with God, and God is with me, and Christ is mine, and I am his, and it is the happiest day I ever lived." He had often said that in his lifetime, for I never knew him otherwise than rejoicing in...

I have heard of a young man who had grown up and left the parental roof, and through evil influences had been enticed into holding skeptical views. His father and mother were both earnest Christians, and it almost broke their hearts to see their son so opposed to the Redeemer. On one occasion they induced him to go with them to hear a celebrated minister. He accompanied them simply to please them, and for no higher motive. The sermon happened to be upon the glories of heaven. It was a very extraordinary sermon, and was calculated to make every Christian in the audience leap for joy. The young man was much gratified with the eloquence of the preacher, but nothing more; he gave him credit for superior oratorical ability, and was interested in...

The gospel is good news because it is the truth of how notably guilty sinners go free because a Substitute died in their place. If you ever find yourself to be the sinner on God’s death row then you will no longer kick against God’s free grace but go out with rejoicing.

The River of Death has been a terror to many; yea the thoughts of it have frightened me. But now, in Christ, I stand easy. I am going to see that HEAD which was crowned with thorns and that FACE which was spit upon for me. I go where I shall live by sight and be with Him whose company is my delight. I have loved to hear my Lord spoken of; now I am going to see Him. I have seen the print of His shoe upon the earth; now I am going to sit at His feet. I have read His Word; now I am going to hear His voice. I have beheld His world, beautiful, though with sin; now I am going to dwell in His heaven where sin can never enter.

There is a queer bit in Bunyan's life, which tells us of the strange reason with which he  comforted himself about the next generation. He said that the young men of his day were so wicked, that he hoped that God meant to make great saints of them.

It was an extraordinary way of looking at evil, but there is a basis of truth in such a view, for "Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound."

Not long ago I was sitting in the study of a pastor friend of mine when I heard someone calling my daughter's name. I kept hearing a little voice hollering, "Hannah ... Hannah." After hearing this a few more times, I finally looked up and there was a small boy standing at the door calling to me, "Hannah. - . Hannah." He didn't know my name, but he knew that I was Hannah's dad; so he was trying to get my attention by calling her name. I dropped what I was doing and entertained the little fellow.

If you want to get the heavenly Father's attention, the best way to do so is by calling on Him in the name of His Son. That "Name which is above every Name" is music to the Father's ear, and all who call upon Him in that...

Every time you insist that I am a sinner, you call me to remember the benefit of Christ my Redeemer, upon whose shoulders, and not mine, lie all my sins. So when you say I am a sinner, you do not terrify me, but comfort my immeasurably.

There is no other SAVIOUR but CHRIST to look to, no other MEDIATOR between God and men to make use of, no other PHYSICIAN of value for diseased and sin-sick souls to apply unto, no other FOUNTAIN but His blood for polluted souls to wash in and be cleansed, no other CITY OF REFUGE or stronghold for souls sensible of danger to flee unto and be safe, no other to come to as BREAD OF LIFE where hungry souls may be fed, no other PLACE OF REST for those that are weary and heavy laden, nor is there ANY OTHER where there is plenty of all grace and security from every enemy, as in HIM; and therefore, to who can they recourse, BUT TO HIM?

If our hope lies in us, or in what we do, it is a delusion. If our hope lies in this church it is a lie. If our hope stands with one foot on the work of Christ and the other foot on our own merits, it will fail us. Hope in Christ is the only hope which can be acceptable to God. Our only hope of Heaven will be through Christ alone. Here our hope begins, and here our hope ends.

  1. My hope is a good hope if my hope is based on the Word of God alone (Romans 15:4)!
  2. My hope is a good hope if my hope rests entirely on Jesus Christ living for me and in me (Colossians 1:27)!
  3. My hope is a good hope which gives me joy, peace, and rest in trusting and leaning on Christ (Romans 15:13).
  4. My hope is a good hope which rests in faith and confidence regardless of circumstances (Romans 4:16-18).
  5. My hope is a good hope which continues in faith and perseveres to the end of this life (Hebrews 3:6).
