Do yourself a favor… Do your soul to favor.. Avail yourself to every opportunity of hearing the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. God speaks to man through his word, he spoke to me; who knows, he may speak to you.

  1. They are overwhelmed by the grace of it. – The true lover of the gospel never gets over the undeserved favor which God has shown him in choosing and calling him to believe and receive salvation.
  2. They are overwhelmed by the greatness of it. – The true lover of the gospel never gets over the wonder, wisdom, power and glory of the gospel. It is truly the greatest story ever told and certainly the greatest thing the sinner has ever known. And so they can never get enough of hearing it and will not (for long) take it for granted or listen indifferently or insensitively to it. A new and living heart will respond to words of life.
  3. They are overwhelmed by the person of it. -- The true lover of the gospel is one who is in awe of, amazed by, in love w...

A man who professes to believe sovereign grace was attending a church where sovereign grace was not preached. I asked him if grace was preached at the church he attended. He replied, “Yes, but not like you do.” Are there other ways to preach grace? What he meant was, they do not preach total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance of the saints – but they still believe in salvation by grace through faith. All that can be said of that is it is dishonest. Someone that does not preach and love God’s sovereign grace does not preach grace at all. They may use the word ‘grace’, but they give it a different meaning. This is deceptive, evil, and soul destroying. May the Lord deliver us from such ir...

If God is sovereign, and His is (Daniel 4:35); if we are begotten of God according to His own will, and we are (James 1:8); if the New Birth is not a result of the will of man, and it most certainly is not (John 1:18); then what is being preached from most pulpits is not from God. Brethren, listen to the message that is being preached and if it contradicts God’s Word, come away from it! Irreverence to the inspired Word of God breeds irreverence to God Himself.

(Psalms 86:5) "For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee."

A congregation cannot be said to welcome the Lord Jesus unless they are all there, which requires punctuality – unless they have come with design to meet him, which implies prayerful expectancy – unless they are ready to hear from him, which involves attention – and unless they are resolved to accept his teaching, which demands obedience.

In Revelation 2 and 3, we read seven letters written by Christ Himself to the seven churches of Asia. He is giving these churches both commendations and warnings. Evidently they did not heed His warnings because none of those churches are with us today! It is only through giving heed to these warnings that you and I will persevere in the faith. There are at least these four warnings to the seven churches.

  1. Losing your first love (Revelation 2:4). When we lose our first love, we no longer hear the Gospel as a sinner. We become like the man in James 1:23-24 who beholds himself in a mirror, and he goes away and forgets what manner of man he was. We then hear the Gospel as a critic, a judge, or in indifference.
  2. The spirit of toleration (Revelatio...

The importance of hearing the Gospel cannot be overstated, because “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). One of the names of the Gospel is “The hearing of faith” (Galatians 3:5). The Lord said on numerous occasions, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Not everybody has ears to hear! In Luke 6:27, the Lord said, “I say unto you that hear.” He only speaks to those who hear. Hearing is an evidence of knowing and being of God. “He that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us” (I John 4:6). We are also warned of becoming dull of hearing (Hebrews 5:11). In the parable of the sower, where the Lord gives us the four types of hearers, He says in Luke 8:18, “Take heed how ye hear!” Not o...

A missionary to a remote tribe was attempting to translate the Scriptures into their language, and he had difficulty finding a word for obedience; a virtue that few of the natives practiced. One day, as he went home from the village, his dog stayed behind. The missionary called his dog to come and follow him. The dog came running at top speed. An old native by the roadside said in the native tongue, “Your dog is all ear.” The missionary got hold of that expression at once and so had a beautiful word for obedience: “A believer is all ears to the words of his Lord!”

During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I there was a law made that everybody should go to his parish church; but many hated to go and hear Protestant doctrine. Because of fear of persecution, they went, but they filled their ears with wool, so that they could not hear.

Many come to church this way each week. They fear their false refuges will be destroyed, so they stop their ears so as not to hear.
