Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

By: Lantana Grace Church | July 11, 2017

  1. Grace is always sovereign. “Therefore, hath He mercy on whom He will have mercy, and whom He will He hardeneth” (Romans 9:18).
  2. Grace is always free. “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).
  3. Grace is always saving. “By grace are ye saved” (Ephesians 2:8).

God’s grace is not an offer up for man’s acceptance or rejection. His grace sovereignly, freely saves! We cannot believe grace without believing these three things regarding grace.

The law knows nothing of mercy; the gospel knows nothing else. By the law I learn that I am guilty, but by the gospel I learn that I am not guilty. By the gospel I learn that I am justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. By the law I learn that I have ruined myself by sin and stand exposed to divine vengeance; but by the gospel I learn that the Lord Jesus was made sin for me that I might be made the righteousness of God in him. By the law my hopes are destroyed, and by the gospel my expectations are raised. By the law I am stripped, exposed, condemned, and slain; but by the gospel I am quickened, justified, accepted, and clothed.

I Corinthians 15:10 - "But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me."

"By the grace of God I am what I am." If I am elect, my election is of grace. If I am redeemed my redemption is of grace. If I am called, I am called by grace. If I am preserved, I am preserved by grace. Whatever there is in me that is acceptable or gives my soul any comfort, must be all of grace and grace alone.

John Newton used to say that, “For a believer in sovereign grace to be proud was the most inconsistent thing in the world. By his own profession he is what he is, knows what he knows, and has what h...

There are really only two religions in the world. One of Cain and the other of Abel. One of Ishmael and the other of Isaac. One of Esau and the other of Jacob. One of law and the other of promise. One of Mount Sinai and the other of Mount Calvary. One condemns, the other finds no fault. One leads to bondage, the other to freedom. One tendeth to death, the other to life. One of weakness, the other of power. One of merit, the other of mercy. One of the weakness of the letter, the other of the power of the Spirit.

Every believer of every generation knows that salvation is all of God’s grace. Salvation must be by grace because all men are lost in sin and cannot do anything to please the holy God. All of salvation must be by grace! God elected a people in grace. “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace (Romans 11:5). Redemption in Christ is all of grace. “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace (Ephesians 1:7). Our calling by the Holy Spirit is all of grace. “Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the worl...

All that God has done for us and is doing for us, ought to encourage us to remember that He will continue to do for us, and that should stop all complaining.

Upon arriving to services one Wednesday evening, to my surprise, there was an old, mangy, rejected and forsaken dog sitting on the front porch of the church building. I was appalled and repulsed at the dog’s sad appearance and horrible condition. This poor creature was in bad shape, yet all I can remember thinking was, “I wish this dog would go away.” I am so grateful that when my merciful, gracious and compassionate Savior looked upon me that His attitude was not like mine. “What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am” (2 Samuel 9:8)? In as bad shape as that poor dog appeared in my sight, how much worse do I, a DEAD DOG sinner appear in God’s? “Precious Lord, how merciful, thou art to me.”

Good men are like ships, the fuller they are the lower they sink in the stream. The more grace a man has the more he complains of want of grace. Grace is not a kind of food that creates a sense of fullness, but as I have heard of some meats that you can eat them till you are hungry, so it is with grace, the more you receive the more you long for.

I have generally noticed that those professors, who were always so very good, as had nothing very marked about their conversion, have gone off to that form of doctrine which I do not find in the Scriptures; but those of us who know how base we were before our conversion feel that there is only one kind of doctrine in which we can believe, and that is the doctrine of sovereign grace. It would take a great deal to grind me down into a belief in free will, because it is contrary to my whole experience. I know this, if the Lord had not first loved me, I never should have loved him; and if there is any good thing in men whatsoever, it must have been implanted there by the Holy Spirit. If salvation be of works, then I can never have it; and if it...

I would not give a snap of the finger for the grace that springs from self, or another snap of my finger for the conversion which is the result of free will. May the Lord give us to be born from above, and if we have not a religion which is not wrought in us by the Spirit of God, the sooner we get rid of it the better, for then, perhaps, we shall go to Him who can give us the true bread of heaven, that we may not be found empty at the last.

I noticed my host, on one preaching excursion, particularly anxious about my candle. Now, as everybody ought to know how careful I am, I was a little surprised, and I put the question to him why he should be so wonderfully particular. "I had my house burned down once, sir," said he. That explained it all. No man so much afraid of fire as he, and they who have been in sin, and know the mischief of it, protest against it the most loudly. They can speak experimentally.

In the matter of salvation we must go to the Word of God. There is no other source to tell us of God, man, sin, Christ, and salvation. The word "grace" is of the utmost importance, the scriptures are full of this word "grace": 38 times in the Old Testament and 115 times in the New Testament.

Moses was interested in knowing if he had found "Grace in the sight of the Lord." Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Grace is what the New Testament is teaching us - "Salvation by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ." To be ignorant of Grace is to be ignorant of the scriptures and of salvation. The meaning of "grace" has been lost to most people, to most it's a word used to get a "c...

I saw a good man taking it easy the other day: he was riding upon a bicycle with both feet off the pedals, and with the brake in full force. I did not blame the cyclist; but one thing was quite clear – he was going down the hill. He would not have had his feet on the rests in that fashion if he had been upon the up-grade. Brother, whenever you begin to put your legs up, and have no more work to do, you are going down hill, and there is no doubt about it. The way to heaven is up hill, and every inch of the way will need effort; for the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence. Grace does not exempt us from activity, but works it in us.
