Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

A certain Christian gentleman with no sound church nearby considered driving many miles to attend the worship service of a church that had been recommended to him. Before making the trip, he visited the pastor’s page on an Internet social networking service. After viewing the pastor’s “likes” and posts and photos, the gentleman had an unfavorable view of the pastor’s character and personal life. The gentleman therefore did not go to hear that pastor preach.

Brothers and sisters, let this be a lesson to all of us. People judge our character by what we publicize regarding ourselves – just as we do to them. Let us be diligent to publicize nothing that contradicts the gospel we believe and practice, brings reproach to Christ, or makes us look li...

By God’s all-wise appointment, our assemblies are the life, the food, and the nourishment of our souls. It is the main way whereby we publicly identify with Christ and His Gospel. We evidence our love for Christ by our loyalty and support of one another in opposition to all false worship. Many things will rise up in competition to the diligent attendance of our assemblies. We must recognize and refuse to give in to anything that is opposed to what Christ commands. The total falling away of a graceless professor always begins with this neglect, this disassociation with God’s people (Hebrews 10:25).

Did the early church meet twice on Sunday? There is no way of knowing. Perhaps they met three times. The Lord’s Table was first observed at night. In I Corinthians 16:2, the church was said to meet together the first day (Sunday) of the week. John called this day “the Lord’s day” (Revelation 1:10). This day is a special day for the hearing of the Gospel. It is not called the Lord’s morning or the Lord’s evening, but the Lord’s Day. Some have suggested that Sunday evening is an important time for families to be together. Without question, families being together is important. Certainly it would be good to spend every evening Monday through Saturday with the family. But the best thing I can do for my family is have them in the place where Chr...

“I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.” Psalm 122:1

I can and do worship the Lord anywhere; I can pray and rejoice in God’s mercy in Christ anywhere; I can read the Word and meditate upon His grace anywhere; but there is a time and a place (referred to as the house of God) where people of God gather in His name each week to worship, pray, preach His Word, and encourage one another. He promised to be in their midst. They meet to seek His face, His blessings, and to hear the Word He has given His servant for them at that time. They also come with children to be identified individually and as families with the Lord and His Kingdom. They come to praise Him in joy and seek His comfort in their sorrows. For all t...

A people hungering after righteousness and a preacher anxious to feed their souls will act in sweet harmony with each other when their common subject is Jesus Christ the Lord.

Believers keep up and maintain their walk with God by secret prayer. The spirit of grace is always accompanied with the spirit of supplication. It is the very breath of the new creature, the fan of the divine life, whereby the spark of holy fire, kindled in the soul by God, is not only kept in, but raised into a flame. A neglect of secret prayer has been frequently an inlet to many spiritual diseases, and has been attended with fatal consequences. Origen observed, 'That the day he offered incense to an idol, he went out of his closet without making use of secret prayer'. It is one of the most noble parts of the believer's spiritual armour. 'Praying always', says the apostle, 'with all manner of supplication.' 'Watch and pray', says our Lord...

Let your conversation be seasoned with grace and language which is spiritually beneficial to others. Avoid unwholesome words, worthless talk, gossip and excessive levity (Colossians 3:8-9; 4:6).

When the Word of God converts a man, it takes away from him his despair, but it does not take away his repentance. True conversion gives a man pardon, but does not make him presumptuous. True conversion gives a man perfect rest in Christ, but it does not stop his progress. True conversion gives a man security, but it does not allow him to leave off being watchful. True conversion gives a man strength and holiness, but it never lets him boast. True conversion brings a man to live for God. He does what he does for the glory of God, not for himself. True conversion makes a man live before God; he desires to walk with God, worship God, and talk to God as a man talks with his friend.

This matter of church membership is often seriously abused. The word CHURCH is assembly, and the word MEMBERSHIP is to be a part of that assembly. It is more than having your name on a church roll. Some have their names on a church roll for family’s sake, some for tradition’s sake, and some for denomination’s sake. Many of these never support the church. It is not New Testament Membership to have your name in one place, and to attend in another. Some have their name on the roll and do not attend for months at a time. No one ever hears from them. Then one day they just show up.

Read Acts 2:41-47 and notice the words "added unto them" "continued stedfastly" "together" "common" "one accord" ...
