Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

By: Lantana Grace Church | August 21, 2018

You say you are unworthy of the least of God’s mercies. Aren’t you glad Christ is worthy and that the redemption He accomplished was for the unworthy? You say you have no goodness or merits to claim. Aren’t you thankful God accepts sinners based upon the goodness and merits of His Son? You say the law affords you no hope. Right you are, but the gospel declares that the mercy and grace of God is freely given to sinners because of the doing and the dying of His dear Son! This is the only salvation worth having and the only one worthy to be proclaimed. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

The sin of Lot’s wife was looking back. Her heart was still in Sodom and Gomorra. The believer’s heart is to always be looking to Christ, always pressing forward toward the mark; and Christ is that mark we press forward to (Philippians 3:14). We do not look with desire to go back as the children of Israel did so many times when trouble came. But we keep moving forward till we reach home. “And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward” (Exodus 14:15).

When we read the story of these two men, it is evident that they had much in common. They had the same parents. They were both born and raised outside the garden. Both had received the same religious instructions. Both came to worship and brought offerings to God. But they differed in their understanding of God’s character, the nature of sin, and the way to approach God.

All men and women are much the same. The natural differences are superficial. We may differ in our ACTS of sin, but there is no difference as to the FACT of sin (Romans 3:9-19)!

This difference in understanding led these men to bring different sacrifices to God. Abel, evidently aware of God’s instructions, in faith and godly fear, brought a slain lamb, typical of the blo...

“Someone told me the other day they heard Pastor Scott Richardson say that he had felt himself within spitting distance of hell and worthless as a warm pitcher of spit." That sounds crude to a refined ear but it rings a sure sound in the heart of those who have been taught of God.

How many of us have heard brother Scott make another statement; "the more you convince me of what a great sinner I am, the more you qualify me to cleave to him who came into this world to save sinners."

Law manifests what is in men—sin! Grace manifests what is in God—love! Law demands righteousness from men. Grace brings righteousness to men. Law sentences men to death. Grace brings dead men to life. Law speaks of what I must do. Grace tells me what C...

I once heard someone say, "I am a born worry-wart." This is true of all of us. Whatever failure or sin we have, we are born with it. But since we have been born again in Christ by the grace of God, we have certain qualities and graces we did not have before. One of these graces is TRUST. We trust our Heavenly Father as a small child trusts his earthly father. Our Heavenly Father loves us much more than we are capable of loving our children, and He has all power and authority over any demon or danger we may encounter! A natural father does not have such power and is limited in his ability to protect or care for the child of his love. Do you and I not realize that no person, no power, no disease, no death can touch one of His o...

II Corinthians 4:7: "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us"

Lest we be exalted above measure, lest we forget the pit from which we have been lifted, lest we forget Who maketh us to differ, lest we forget that in our flesh dwelleth no good thing, and lest we forget that without Him we can do nothing, we have this treasure of glory, this gift of life, this knowledge of the glory of God in earthen vessels! This treasure is not in vessels of fine wood to be admired. This treasure is in vessels of clay, worthless crumbling dirt! "Dust thou art, and to dust thou shalt return." Why? That the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us! That your faith ...

We need to be continually reminded that our life is but a vapor, which appeareth for a little while and then vanisheth away. If not we will walk carelessly. We will let worldliness eat away at us like a cancer. This is not our rest, so we should take no comfort in it. Nothing of this world is worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. We must trim our lamps for the time when the Bridegroom comes. We are told to stand always ready, waiting for the appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, or for the call that it is time for the body to return to the earth.

I see no reason to contradict and fuss with that professing Christian who insists that Christ has done no more for him than he did for Judas. Maybe the poor man is right. How can you contradict him if he is telling you the truth? I just take him at his word and leave it at that. But don’t imagine that Peter believed Christ did no more for him than he did for Judas. Both men had horrible falls into sin. One betrayed Christ and the other denied him. Christ left Judas to die in his sin and go to his own place – to hell. Christ made intercession for Peter and delivered him from what otherwise would have been a damnable fall. Ask Peter if Christ did more for him than he did for Judas. Ask any believer who has truly been taught of God and he will...

"Lord, what will you have me to do?" (Acts 9:6). This is Paul's question on the road where he met the sovereign Christ. It was not, what do I think is best for me? Or what will afford me the most pleasure and comfort? Or even what do other people do? But "Lord, what will YOU have me to do?"

In every case enable me, by Thy grace, to do what is pleasing in Thy sight and that which will bring glory to Thy name. Where we get in trouble is putting our wills and ways before His! It is not I but Christ, His gospel, His church, His kingdom, His glory, which must be considered. When this is settled "I" will fall in the right place and though the way may not be easy; in the end it will be pleasant. "In all thy ways a...

Faith is not understanding God or figuring Him out intellectually. Faith is simply believing in our hearts that everything God has written and promised in His Word is true, even if we don’t understand it.

We believe in the absolute predestination of God in all things! "He worketh all things after the counsel of His own will." (Ephesians 1:11). There is nothing that happens by chance. But does this belief cause us to live in a kind of stoic indifference and fatalism? Certainly not! Paul also said to the Ephesians, after He told them about the absolute predestination of God, "Be very careful how you live - not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil." (Ephesians 5:15-16) (NIV). He said the same thing to the Colossians in Colossians 4:5 ("Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time."). Yes, we believe in the absolute predestination of our God in al...

"Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ." - II Peter 1:1

Faith does not grow in man’s heart by nature; it is a thing which is obtained. It is not a matter which springs up by a process of education, or by the example and excellent instruction of our parents; it is a thing which has to be obtained. Not imitation, but regeneration; not development, but conversion. All our good things come from without us, only evil can be educed from within us. Now, that which is obtained by us must be given to us; and well are we taught in Scripture that "faith is not of ourselves, it is the gift of God."

Faith . . . is not life giving, but proof of life. Faith is not a work for salvation, but a work of salvation. Faith is not what saves us, but is certain proof God has saved us. Faith is not a condition we meet, but the condition God’s Spirit puts in us to “make us meet” (Colossians 1:12). Is all this important? Do we split theological hairs here? NO! NO! For the Glory of God is at stake! That other (false) gospel says faith is man’s work, man’s will. But no, faith is “not of yourselves, but the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Faith is “according to the working of His mighty power” (Ephesians 1:19). Therefore, it is “to the praise of the glory of His grace” (Ephesians 1:6) . . . and not rather “to the praise of our faith.”

Having religion is one thing, but knowing and walking with Christ is different! Having religion – the world understands and tolerates. But free grace – the world neither understands, nor tolerates! Any two religious errors can walk together, and permit them both to exist! But the truth of God's grace cannot exist with error – for one always must go!

I have observed many who profess to know Christ and believe the Gospel of grace, and yet they are unhappy and, generally speaking, miserable people. How can this be? I believe I know why. These people walk around with a dark cloud over their head because they are so taken up with the things of this world. They are always in a strait between Christ and the world, and feel bad because they fear they are not giving Christ their first priority. That is the problem. If Christ is merely "first priority," you have missed Him altogether. He is ALL to those who know Him, not merely "first priority." I once heard someone say, "Most people have just enough religion to make them miserable." That is the problem! Most people...

Modern day evangelism (so-called) says to any and all it approaches, God loves you and Christ died for you. But none of the prophets nor any of the apostles addressed people in this way. The starting point of true evangelism is to acquaint men with the holy and sovereign character of God. This is the "beginning of wisdom", which is able to make a man wise unto salvation; for THE FEAR OF THE LORD brings men to true repentance and faith.

One great difference between believers and lost religionists is this: lost religionists fit the worship of God into their lives. Believers arrange their lives around the worship of God.

Believing God, we cannot compromise! If we truly believe God, we will serve Him with confidence and peace, simply trusting His total sovereignty, power, wisdom, and grace. The fear of man shall not be a threat to us; the favor of man shall not be a motive to us. The circumstances of the hour shall not pressure us, and the desire for results shall not alter our message nor cause us to employ the devised methods of others. If we believe God, we will simply perform our responsibilities faithfully and wait on the Lord to perform His work according to His own will.

To wait upon God means I cannot see the way out of this difficulty, but I shall see it. I do not yet perceive God’s plan for my deliverance, but I shall be delivered. I do not know how bread shall be given me, but I shall have it even if God has to send ravens with it or rend heaven itself in twain. I shall have His promise fulfilled, and I shall wait His time.
