Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

We need to be continually reminded that our life is but a vapor, which appeareth for a little while and then vanisheth away. If not we will walk carelessly. We will let worldliness eat away at us like a cancer. This is not our rest, so we should take no comfort in it. Nothing of this world is worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. We must trim our lamps for the time when the Bridegroom comes. We are told to stand always ready, waiting for the appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, or for the call that it is time for the body to return to the earth.

I see no reason to contradict and fuss with that professing Christian who insists that Christ has done no more for him than he did for Judas. Maybe the poor man is right. How can you contradict him if he is telling you the truth? I just take him at his word and leave it at that. But don’t imagine that Peter believed Christ did no more for him than he did for Judas. Both men had horrible falls into sin. One betrayed Christ and the other denied him. Christ left Judas to die in his sin and go to his own place – to hell. Christ made intercession for Peter and delivered him from what otherwise would have been a damnable fall. Ask Peter if Christ did more for him than he did for Judas. Ask any believer who has truly been taught of God and he will...

"Lord, what will you have me to do?" (Acts 9:6). This is Paul's question on the road where he met the sovereign Christ. It was not, what do I think is best for me? Or what will afford me the most pleasure and comfort? Or even what do other people do? But "Lord, what will YOU have me to do?"

In every case enable me, by Thy grace, to do what is pleasing in Thy sight and that which will bring glory to Thy name. Where we get in trouble is putting our wills and ways before His! It is not I but Christ, His gospel, His church, His kingdom, His glory, which must be considered. When this is settled "I" will fall in the right place and though the way may not be easy; in the end it will be pleasant. "In all thy ways a...

Faith is not understanding God or figuring Him out intellectually. Faith is simply believing in our hearts that everything God has written and promised in His Word is true, even if we don’t understand it.

We believe in the absolute predestination of God in all things! "He worketh all things after the counsel of His own will." (Ephesians 1:11). There is nothing that happens by chance. But does this belief cause us to live in a kind of stoic indifference and fatalism? Certainly not! Paul also said to the Ephesians, after He told them about the absolute predestination of God, "Be very careful how you live - not as unwise, but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil." (Ephesians 5:15-16) (NIV). He said the same thing to the Colossians in Colossians 4:5 ("Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time."). Yes, we believe in the absolute predestination of our God in al...

"Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ." - II Peter 1:1

Faith does not grow in man’s heart by nature; it is a thing which is obtained. It is not a matter which springs up by a process of education, or by the example and excellent instruction of our parents; it is a thing which has to be obtained. Not imitation, but regeneration; not development, but conversion. All our good things come from without us, only evil can be educed from within us. Now, that which is obtained by us must be given to us; and well are we taught in Scripture that "faith is not of ourselves, it is the gift of God."

Faith . . . is not life giving, but proof of life. Faith is not a work for salvation, but a work of salvation. Faith is not what saves us, but is certain proof God has saved us. Faith is not a condition we meet, but the condition God’s Spirit puts in us to “make us meet” (Colossians 1:12). Is all this important? Do we split theological hairs here? NO! NO! For the Glory of God is at stake! That other (false) gospel says faith is man’s work, man’s will. But no, faith is “not of yourselves, but the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Faith is “according to the working of His mighty power” (Ephesians 1:19). Therefore, it is “to the praise of the glory of His grace” (Ephesians 1:6) . . . and not rather “to the praise of our faith.”

Having religion is one thing, but knowing and walking with Christ is different! Having religion – the world understands and tolerates. But free grace – the world neither understands, nor tolerates! Any two religious errors can walk together, and permit them both to exist! But the truth of God's grace cannot exist with error – for one always must go!

I have observed many who profess to know Christ and believe the Gospel of grace, and yet they are unhappy and, generally speaking, miserable people. How can this be? I believe I know why. These people walk around with a dark cloud over their head because they are so taken up with the things of this world. They are always in a strait between Christ and the world, and feel bad because they fear they are not giving Christ their first priority. That is the problem. If Christ is merely "first priority," you have missed Him altogether. He is ALL to those who know Him, not merely "first priority." I once heard someone say, "Most people have just enough religion to make them miserable." That is the problem! Most people...

Modern day evangelism (so-called) says to any and all it approaches, God loves you and Christ died for you. But none of the prophets nor any of the apostles addressed people in this way. The starting point of true evangelism is to acquaint men with the holy and sovereign character of God. This is the "beginning of wisdom", which is able to make a man wise unto salvation; for THE FEAR OF THE LORD brings men to true repentance and faith.

One great difference between believers and lost religionists is this: lost religionists fit the worship of God into their lives. Believers arrange their lives around the worship of God.

Believing God, we cannot compromise! If we truly believe God, we will serve Him with confidence and peace, simply trusting His total sovereignty, power, wisdom, and grace. The fear of man shall not be a threat to us; the favor of man shall not be a motive to us. The circumstances of the hour shall not pressure us, and the desire for results shall not alter our message nor cause us to employ the devised methods of others. If we believe God, we will simply perform our responsibilities faithfully and wait on the Lord to perform His work according to His own will.

To wait upon God means I cannot see the way out of this difficulty, but I shall see it. I do not yet perceive God’s plan for my deliverance, but I shall be delivered. I do not know how bread shall be given me, but I shall have it even if God has to send ravens with it or rend heaven itself in twain. I shall have His promise fulfilled, and I shall wait His time.

I suppose that the most difficult thing any believer has to learn is that “Without Him we can do nothing.” This is our creed but not our experience! We will never be effectually used for God’s true glory until it becomes our experience. God will never use men that are proud enough to think themselves necessary or capable. He will throw away the vessel which begins to boast in itself or allows others to boast in it. Whatever is our strength in the flesh is sure to become our weakness in the spirit – whether it be our intelligence, our morality, our length of service, our doctrine, our courage or whatever. Gideon feared the Midianites because of the small number of his soldiers, but the Lord said, “Your soldiers are yet too many for me.” I wo...

You should come waiting for nothing and delaying for no reason. You should come as a hungry sinner to be filled, as a poor sinner to be enriched, as a lost sinner to be found, as a wicked, undeserving sinner to be clothed with His righteousness. If you can come like this, our Lord will receive you.

“With the heart man believeth unto righteousness” (Romans 10:10) - that means, with the whole man! ....Our understanding, our affections, and our will. I understand that Christ is the only way to the Father. I am not seeking to come “some other way.” Not only do I understand this, I love Christ being the only way to the Father. I do not merely have a cognitive understanding of Christ being the only Way, I love Christ being my only ground of acceptance. Thus, not only do I understand what I believe, I love what, or rather Who I believe. The understanding and affections are not all that is involved in believing with the heart. The will is also involved. If I were given a choice of some other way of salvation, I would reject it. The way of sov...

The true measure of whether a person really believes the gospel of God’s sovereign, free grace in Christ, is not merely when he sees its doctrines in the Scriptures; especially those of Divine sovereignty in election, the particular and effectual redemption of Christ, and the invincible call of the Holy Spirit. Nor is it when he gives mental assent that they are true (though both are vital). The true measure is when he sees them as necessary for his own salvation! “Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean.”

In Micah 6:8, God has three requirements for us, “What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God.” 1) Know the truth 2) Love the truth 3) Walk in the truth. (He is the way, truth, and life.) Being a sinner and yet JUST before a Holy God is the heart of the Gospel. Every child of God knows this. Yes, but if this is just a mere understanding of the doctrine, that is of no use, for devils believe and tremble (James 2:19). A child of God also loves the Gospel and is glad in God’s mercy and grace, rejoicing in it (Philippians 3:1; 4:4)! Any man can say he believes it, and claim he loves it (James 2:14; Matthew 6:22-24), but if it’s not reflected in a changed life (walking humbly) then it’s all m...

When William Carey announced that he wished to go overseas to preach to the heathen, a pastor replied, "Young man, if God wishes to save the heathen, He will do it without you!" What a bad spirit and error! Yes! God can accomplish His purpose and save His people without me and without you, but He will use someone to preach the Word, someone to send the messenger, and someone to pray for and support His servant. I want that someone to be you and me! What a privilege and joy to have something to do with His glorious purpose to glorify Christ in calling out a people. Today, pray for your pastor as he preaches, encourage and support the missionaries, invite someone to hear the Word, give out a tape or book, and let us be about our Fat...
