Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

(Psalms 83:1-3) "Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones."

What is done is not against Israel, but against the Israel of God, so against the God of Israel. They are not our enemies, but Thine enemies. They hate God – they hate those who worship God – because they hate God's Gospel. They have taken counsel against thy hidden ones – those hidden in Christ. Our life is hid with Christ in God.

Any objection a man has to distinguishing grace, any charge he makes of unfairness on God’s part for Him saving one by His grace and passing another by through His justice has this at its root: an ignorance of sin. If we have an understanding of sin we would understand no man has any claims on God. It is utterly just and right for God to judge somebody for their sin and cast them into hell. What we are amazed by is how God could give His Son for a vast multitude of people who deserve to be damned. We do not sit in judgment of the great Judge. We are awed by His grace!

We preach sovereign election not only because it is revealed in God’s Word, exhibiting man’s total depravity and inability, but because it exalts a sovereign God in His Trinity of Persons. It reveals the magnitude of His kingdom and defines who are the objects of the Father’s everlasting love, the travail of the Redeemer’s soul, and the objects of the Spirit’s concern and care. Within election’s hallowed bounds the whole seed royal of heaven are found by a seeking Saviour and a searching Spirit.

Is it contradictory to tell someone to come and drink from the River of Life freely, but then tell them they are unable? Should we just tell men to come to Christ and leave out the part about God’s sovereign election and man’s total inability? Many would say we are just confusing the message and restricting the free offer of salvation by telling men they can’t come unless the Father makes them willing by His irresistible grace which is according to His will and good pleasure. Why is it necessary when commanding men to come to Christ to tell them they can’t? Why are total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, and irresistible grace essential elements of the gospel? One simple reason. Without these truths, men will make a work...

“No man can come to Me except the Father which hath sent Me draw Him” (John 6:44). Because of our evil nature, we lack the ability to come to Christ. We must be drawn with irresistible, invincible grace. We will not approach Him unless He causes us to. “Blessed is the man whom Thou choosest, and causeth to approach unto Thee” (Psalm 65:4). Being drawn to Christ is the result of His everlasting love. “Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee” (Jeremiah 31:3). Being drawn to Christ is not being drawn against your will, but made willing! “Thy people shall be willing in the day of Thy power” (Psalm 110:3). A believer is painfully aware of a sinful nature that will not come to Christ, and a...

I am not one of God's elect because of something good God saw in me. There never was, is not now, and never will be any good in our flesh. "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing." Paul said he knew it. The problem with most religious folks is that they don't know it and until they do, they will continue to brag and boast of what they have done for God.

I am not one of God's elect because of something God saw I would do. Left to my own will, I would have continued in darkness and even now would depart from God.

I am not one of God's elect because God needed me. It bothers me when we leave the impression with anyone that God, or the church of the Lord Jesus can profit in any way from our presence, i...
