Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

One of the most dreadful things I have ever witnessed was talking to an ungodly man just a few hours before he died. I asked him if he was afraid. His answer to me was, “No.” He died a few hours later with a calm conscience. This poor soul was on the very verge of eternity without one ounce of a God given hope and yet his conscience was calm.

What God refuses to do for some men here, that is, to awaken the conscience out of it’s gross ignorance, He will suffer the torments of hell to do yonder. The rich man fared sumptuously every day and may well have lived with a calm conscience - and died with one too. But as soon as the flame of hell touched him he knew he was in trouble. That poor man I was talking to, I fear, suffered the same fat...

God does not say "when I see your faith," or "when I see your believing," or "when I see your experience," or "when I see your baptism," or "when I see your graces," but "When I see the blood, I will pass over you" (Exodus 12:13).

When he was dying said to one by his bed, "I heard an old divine once say that, when the most learned Christian minister comes to die, he draws his greatest comfort from the plainest promises of God's Word; and so do I; and I bless God that they are so simple that they do not need any great understanding in order to grasp them. My hope is simply in the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour." And with this he died.

Some years ago, an aged minister, who had long and lovingly known Christ, was on his deathbed. Memory had gone. In relation to those he loved best, it was a perfect blank. But someone whispered in his ear, "Brother, do you know Jesus Christ?" With a voice of rapture, he exclaimed,

"Jesus, my Lord! I know his name;

His name is all my trust;

Nor will he put my hope to shame,

Nor let my soul be lost."

"All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out"
(John 6:37).

This declaration involves the doctrine of election: there are some whom the Father gave to Christ. It involves the doctrine of effectual calling: these who are given must and shall come; however stoutly they may set themselves against it, yet they shall be brought out of darkness into God's marvelous light. It teaches us the indispensable necessity of faith; for even those who are given to Christ are not saved except they come to Jesus. Even they must come, for there is no other way to heaven but by the door, Christ Jesus. All that the Father gives to our Redeemer must come to him, therefore none can come to heaven ex...

Have you ever slipped on ice? Before you hit the ground, you know you are in for a painful fall, and there is not one thing you can do to prevent it. Have you ever felt like you slipped and fell into sin? It happens so quickly, and you could feel yourself falling? David said, “When I said, my foot slippeth: thy mercy O Lord, held me up” (Psalm 94:18). What a blessing of grace. When the believer’s foot slips, we fall into the hands of mercy!

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” What a promise! What a glorious inheritance! What a blessed comfort! Walk in it, believer; lie down upon it; trust in it; rest upon it; it will do for all the days of your life and be a soft pillow for your death!

“To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not tiresome, but for you it is safe” (necessary) (Philippians 3:1). We never grow weary of preaching the Word of our Lord, the Gospel of His grace; and we never tire of gathering together in His name to worship, pray, and fellowship with His people. The old story is forever NEW; and the familiar Scriptures are fresher and sweeter with every taste.

  1. To often hear His Word preached is to keep our hearts and minds on Christ, the fountain of life.
  2. To often hear His Word preached is a safeguard against false doctrine and false teachers. An untaught child is more easily led astray than one “taught of God.”
  3. To often hear His Word preached guards against self-righteousness. There is little danger of a...

Do we really have confidence in the grace of God? If we do, we will be satisfied with His grace and His grace alone. If we have confidence in His grace, we will not try to offer up anything of our own as a reason for God to bless us. If we have confidence in His grace, we will rest secure that, whatever happens in this life, God will preserve us blameless for the next life. If we have confidence in His grace, we will not try to build a church with fleshy enticements but will be satisfied with preaching and teaching the grace of God, knowing that God will call His sheep by that Gospel. If we have confidence in the grace of God, we will not be quick to judge others but will be patient with our brethren, knowing that God grows His people at Hi...

If the Lord had not first loved me, I never should have loved Him; and if there is any good thing in men whatsoever, it must have been implanted there by the Holy Spirit. If salvation be of works, then I can never have it; and if it be the reward of natural goodness, then I shall never have it. I feel that it must be of grace, and of grace alone.

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul?  And why art thou disquieted within me?”  (Psalm 42:11)

This is a question that I ask myself often.  I ask this to my own soul, mind and heart.  Why art thou cast down?  If I am honest with myself, then all the answers are traced back to only one…SIN!

Why do I worry and fret about things that really do not matter, especially when God has promised me that He will never leave me or forsake me?  Why do I question so many things, when I know that my Lord controls ALL THINGS?  Why do I linger afar from His love, when He has promised me that He loves me with an everlasting love?  Why?  Because of the sin which so easily besets me!  The reason my soul is cast down is because I look within my sinful flesh, inste...

Believer, if you are in heaviness and depression because of the trials and temptations in your life, remember there is a ‘need be’ of these very trials that make you heavy. They are what you need, given by God for your good and his glory. That is why James said “Count it all joy when you fall in to diverse temptations.” We do not rejoice in the trials themselves, but we rejoice in Him who sent them. This is why we are told “in everything give thanks”. Even give thanks for the trial for “this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you”.

Regarding the great cause of God in this world, we must expect to meet with many slanders, many hardships, and many defeats. All through history, "all that live godly in Christ Jesus suffer persecution." Read the lives of the great preachers of this Gospel, such as Luther, Calvin, Whitfield, Edwards, and all the others. They all suffered for the cause of Christ. But, Christ will win the day. Never be discouraged, but go to the throne of grace more earnestly, and ask for grace to keep you, and strengthen you, for the battle.

I have heard it said of the elephant, that sometimes before he crosses a bridge he puts his trunk, and perhaps one foot, upon it; he wants to know if it is quite safe, for he is not going to trust his bulky body to things that were built only for horses and men. Well, after he has tried it, if he finds it strong enough, away he goes, and his great carcase is carried right across the stream.

Now, suppose you and I sat on the other side, and said we were afraid the bridge would not bear us! Why, how absurd our unbelief would be. So when you see a great elephantine sinner, like the apostle Paul, go lumbering over the bridge of mercy, and not a timber creaks, and the bridge does not even strain under the load; why, then methinks, you may come ru...

"The LORD bless thee."That which makes this blessing precious is that it is the blessing from Jehovah. There is no limit to the goodwill of the infinite merciful One. When Jehovah blesses, it is after the manner of His sovereign Almightiness.
"And keep thee."When God keeps us, who can be against us?
"The Lord make his face to shine upon thee."Nothing can shine like that.
"And be gracious unto thee."This is the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
"The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee."This is to be approved, accepted, favored by God.
"And give thee peace."This is that "peace of God which passeth all understanding."

The Lord blesses His people "according to the riches of his glory by Christ Jesus."

One mark of the children of God is that they love one another, and they love to associate with each other. That is why we have churches. Christ’s sheep do not like to wander alone; they love company. Some professors claim to get on best by themselves. But God's people love fellowship. "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren."
