Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

I heard a financial advisor say once, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” What he meant by that statement was, don’t put all your investments in one thing. That may be good advice for this changing world, but when it comes to heavenly things we are to put all our eggs, so called, in one basket. All our faith, hope, love, joy, peace, rest, etc. in Jesus Christ. “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (II Timothy 1:12).

Children take more notice of what their parents do, than what they say. Actions speak louder than words. Even small children can see through us when we are not sincere and honest. If we live contrary to God’s word, a child will pick up on it. Not only might that child lose confidence in a parent’s profession of faith, but the child may learn to be a hypocrite like the parent. God give us grace to walk honestly and sincerely before him first and foremost. Then and only then will we walk honestly and sincerely before our children.

Exodus 33:19 “And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.”

Had God not loved a particular people; and had God not been gracious to a particular people and shown mercy to a particular people, not one soul would have ever been saved. We would have never chosen Him had He not chosen us. We would have never loved Him had He not loved us. We would have rejected His mercy and grace had it not been irresistible. Thank God for His sovereignty in all these things toward us.

There are five words found in Hosea chapter 14, verse 4 that I rest my soul upon. “I will love them freely.” There is not one thing found in me that would commend God’s love to me, for if there were, His love would not be free. Equally evident is the blessed truth that there is nothing in me that would hinder God’s love, mercy and grace to me. Why? Because God promises, “I will love them freely.” How does God remain just and at the same time love and justify chosen sinners? Only in the substitution and death of His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. In Christ God loves me freely!

Are you happy? Yes! but I am not without times of sorrow and depression. Like any human, I weep over loved ones, friends, sickness, death, and disappointment. But I sorrow not as those who have no hope. – Christ is my hope! He loved me, gave Himself for me, and will make all these things work together for my eternal good.

Are you at rest in your soul? Yes! but I am not free from concern and conviction over my sins and my infirmities. I love Christ but not as I should or as I desire. – Christ is my rest! I am satisfied with Him, His mercy, His grace, and His love; but I will never be totally satisfied until I wake with His likeness.

Do you have peace? Yes! but that peace with God, peace of conscience, and peace in any situation or conditi...

False preachers today have made a beggar of the Lord of Lords. No, my proud religionist, you are the beggar. God is not obligated to do anything but damn you to the eternal praise of His justice. If you keep listening to the wrong voices, your end shall be with those before you of whom Christ said, “I am come in my Father's name and ye receive me not, let another come in his own name and him ye will receive” (John 5:43).

If I had died as a child, I would be assured of a place in glory; but, THAT DOOR IS CLOSED. I am an adult. If I had been holy in birth and perfect in life, I would reign with Christ; but, I was born in sin and even my righteousnesses are filthy rags, so THAT DOOR IS CLOSED.

What shall I do? Is there no door open to such as I? Yes, there is ONE! Christ said, “I am the door, by me if any enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out and find pasture” (John 10:9). Am I such a fool that I will turn from that one, God-given door, and perish? God forbid!

John 15:5 "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."

  1. Without Christ we would not exist (Colossians 1:16 "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they bethrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:").
  2. Without Christ we would not know God (Matthew 11:27 "All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.").
  3. Without Christ we would have no wis...

Genesis 3:9 “And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?”

Adam was not seeking God. God is always the one who comes to seek and to save his lost child. He makes us confess our sins like God made Adam confess his transgression.

Sinner, where are you this hour? You have sinned against God. Are you hiding in some fig leaves you have made? God makes his child confess our sins, especially the sins of our so-called righteousness. God strips away all our fig leaves and brings us to rest all in Christ. Through God’s gift of faith, he clothes us in the righteousness of Christ. We see it in type, “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them” (Genesis 3:21).

Notice, Adam sinned, God made...

If I am not saved, it is not because I want to be saved and God refuses to save me. If I am not saved, it is not because God did not elect me, Christ did not die for me, and the Holy Spirit did not give me life. If I am not saved, it is because I do not want to be saved. That does not mean I do not want to be delivered from the punishment of hell. But it does mean I do not want to be saved God’s way on God’s terms. If I am saved, I do want to be saved. If I am saved, I am saved because God elected me, Christ died for me, and the Holy Spirit gave me life! But if I am not saved, I have no one to blame but myself. I do not want to be saved. Could anyone charge God with injustice because He did not give to somebody something they did not want?

This is the point on which a man’s relationship with God hinges. As simple as the question may sound, it is most searching. If a man has no love for Christ, he has no faith. If a man truly loves Christ, all is right; if not, all is wrong.

Mark 5:19 “Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord has done for thee.”

These were the words of the Lord to the man who had been possessed by a legion of demons. The Lord had cast them out, and now the man wanted to go with the Lord as He was leaving. But the Lord told him to go back to his friends and give them the Gospel message: The great things He has done. Most of what goes under the name of preaching is the great things He will do if…. That does my soul no good because I know where that will go. In reality, that is a message of salvation by works. Christ will do this if you do something that will obligate Him to respond. The message of the Gospel is what He has done! He did not say, “It will be finished if….” but...

We find God’s purpose in choosing some to salvation and passing by others in Romans 9:11: "(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)". God chooses whom he will, not based on any good or evil in us. He did so to declare that salvation is not of our works but of God that calleth, “For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy” (Romans 9:15-16). By sovereign grace, God chose a multitude in Christ, blessed us with all blessings...

I left the pulpit one night and a fellow asked me, “Do you believe the law to be a believer’s rule of life?” He seemed surprised when I told him I did not. His very next question was, “How do you know how to live?” I told him immediately that I lived just as the Apostle Paul, “The life that I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God” (Galatians 2:20). This was the rule of life for Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Abel and all others who have nothing but Jesus Christ to live upon. Someone would say, “You mean you live as you want to?” I wish I could: I would be filled with the Spirit, I would never sin again, all my motives would be pure, and I would be delivered from the body of this death. Oh, I wish I could live just like I want to. The ...

Isaiah 42:4 "He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law."

The same people who say Christ died for everybody, will also say that ninety percent of the people He died for, are not, nor will not be saved. How can you trust your soul to a failure? You would not trust your car to a mechanic that had a success rate of ten percent. I know you would not trust your life in the hands of a surgeon who lost ninety percent of their patients. Truth is, they are not trusting anyone but themselves. It’s their will and their works that they are trusting. For them, it’s not the sacrifice that saves but rather their acceptance of the sacrifice that saves.

To believe God is no small thing! It is the evidence of a heart reconciled unto God; it is the proof of our being weaned from our own works and deeds; it is a clear sign of the true conviction of sin; it is honoring to Christ, our only Redeemer; it is the essence of true worship; and it is the root of sincere obedience.”

A baby does not have to be taught how to cry for momma. A baby has a natural instinct to cry when something is wrong. A baby also does not have to be taught to have a “hurt cry” or a “hungry cry”. The baby just cries out of need and momma instinctively knows her baby’s cry.

This is the way a child of God cries out to our Father. Our cries for mercy, grace, help, or comfort do not have to be intelligent cries with wonderful reasons given that will cause our Heavenly Father to hear us. All a child of God has to cry is “Abba, Father” and our Father knows just exactly what we need.

We measure distance by time. We are apt to say that a certain place is so many hours from us. If it is a hundred miles off, and there is no railroad, we think it a long way; if there is a railway, we think we can be there in no time. But how near must we say heaven is? — for it is just one sigh, and we get there. Why, our departed friends are only in the upper room, as it were, of the same house. They have not gone far off; they are upstairs, and we are down below.

I hear many people talk about God having a plan for our lives. I hear others speak of God having a plan of salvation. The nature of the word "plan" subtly destroys the sovereignty of God and the helplessness of man. God does not "plan" anything. The sovereign God PURPOSES everything.

A plan (like a blueprint) is something that someone else can carry out and put into being. Salvation is not God’s plan that man must make effectual by his obedience. Salvation is what God purposed to do for His people by the obedience and sacrifice of His Son and what Christ the Savior has fully accomplished for His people. “The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so sh...

Quite some time ago a man asked a question to one of our brethren concerning this congregation. He said: “Is anybody getting saved down there?” Depending on what denomination a person attends, that means: have you gotten anybody to speak in tongue’s yet?, or have you gotten anybody to get baptized yet?, or some other thing that religion tries to get men and women to do.

Salvation is not in what we can get men and women to do. Salvation is in what Christ has already done! The terminology of a believing child of God is NOT: “I got saved”, but “Christ saved me!” Usually a man who “gets saved” will get lost after a while. But if God the Spirit ever reveals to a sinner that salvation is not his choice - God the Father chose to give him to Christ ...
