Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

We measure distance by time. We are apt to say that a certain place is so many hours from us. If it is a hundred miles off, and there is no railroad, we think it a long way; if there is a railway, we think we can be there in no time. But how near must we say heaven is? — for it is just one sigh, and we get there. Why, our departed friends are only in the upper room, as it were, of the same house. They have not gone far off; they are upstairs, and we are down below.

I hear many people talk about God having a plan for our lives. I hear others speak of God having a plan of salvation. The nature of the word "plan" subtly destroys the sovereignty of God and the helplessness of man. God does not "plan" anything. The sovereign God PURPOSES everything.

A plan (like a blueprint) is something that someone else can carry out and put into being. Salvation is not God’s plan that man must make effectual by his obedience. Salvation is what God purposed to do for His people by the obedience and sacrifice of His Son and what Christ the Savior has fully accomplished for His people. “The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so sh...

Quite some time ago a man asked a question to one of our brethren concerning this congregation. He said: “Is anybody getting saved down there?” Depending on what denomination a person attends, that means: have you gotten anybody to speak in tongue’s yet?, or have you gotten anybody to get baptized yet?, or some other thing that religion tries to get men and women to do.

Salvation is not in what we can get men and women to do. Salvation is in what Christ has already done! The terminology of a believing child of God is NOT: “I got saved”, but “Christ saved me!” Usually a man who “gets saved” will get lost after a while. But if God the Spirit ever reveals to a sinner that salvation is not his choice - God the Father chose to give him to Christ ...

The Lord Jesus Christ came into this world to save his people from their sins. The blessed good news of the gospel is that he did what he came to do. With his own blood he entered once into the holy place, “having obtained eternal redemption for us!”

I use my phone to broadcast our services ‘live’, and last Wednesday night, about an hour or so after the service, I discovered that my phone was still on ‘live recording.’ All of my private conversations were heard by whomever was still listening. As you would, I carefully thought back on all that was said; fearful of having said something I shouldn’t have. Then the thought occurred to me, ‘we should talk in private as if everyone were listening. We should talk to each other and talk about (or not talk about) each other as if everyone were listening. And we should act in private like everyone is watching. Someone is listening and watching; HE Who matters most. . . our Lord. “There is not a word in my tongue, but lo, O LORD, Thou knowest it ...

The true believer has conflict with the religious world. The greatest enemies of Christ have always been those who boasted of their knowledge of God. It was in the synagogue that the death of Christ was plotted. It was in the cathedrals that the reformers were tried and burned. It is in the churches and the seminaries that the gospel of grace is denied.

O the wonder, the glory and beauty of God’s Word. It’s beyond our ability to fully understand and appreciate. But we marvel at what we do understand. God uses many things to describe His Word: everyday, ordinary, yet wonderful and necessary things. He likens His Word to things such as: Light, Bread, Milk, Honey, Meat, Fire, Water, Hammer, Sword, Plough, Seed, Rain, Dew, Treasure, Gold, Net, Mirror, a Kiss! All this and more is God’s Word for His people.

Faith is necessary for salvation. But we do not look to our faith to save us; rather, in faith, we look to Christ. Repentance is necessary for salvation. But we do not look to our repentance to save us; rather, in repentance, we turn to Christ. There are graces which God works in us as He saves us. But these graces are never to be the object of our trust, confidence, or hopeful gaze. All the graces God gives us in salvation are to be used to look to, turn to, appreciate, and lay hold of Christ, who is our salvation!

Mark 9:24 "Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief”

I really believe that Christ is all in salvation and yet I constantly look within for evidences of salvation. I really believe that God is sovereign and yet I worry and complain. I really believe that God is the first cause of all things, yet I can harbor anger and resentment. I really desire likeness to Christ, yet I still have a desire for sin. Why these contradictions? Because I have two natures - the nature of the first birth and the nature of the second birth. One that always believes; one thatnever believes. One that always sins, one that never sins. These two natures operating in my one consciousness. Hence my cry, “Lord, I believe, help Thou mine unbelief.”

John 13:13 “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.”

I question today’s easy believism which obligates God but does not glorify God; which designates Jesus Christ as Saviour but denies Him His Lordship. Rolfe Barnard used to say, “Don’t talk to me so much about your Saviour, but tell me who your Lord is. SOMEBODY IS YOUR LORD! Whoever your Lord is, his servant you are!”

What do we say to our generation? “Accept Jesus as your Saviour?” It’s hard to find anyone who HAS NOT already done that! Or do we say, “Cease from self and bow to the claims of the Lord Jesus Christ?” It is hard to find anyone who HAS done that! Christ will be LORD OF ALL!

Mark 8:36 "...and lose his own soul."

No man can describe the loss of the soul as he should. No man can paint this dreadful picture in its true colors. You and I will never fully understand what it means to lose one's soul until we pass through the valley of death and wake up in eternity. Then, and not until then, shall we know the value of the soul. The value of things will change greatly in that day. The hour is coming when money, bank notes, and bonds will be worth no more than waste paper. The day is coming when our diamonds, silver, and gold, will be as dust in the streets. The day will dawn when houses and lands will be as worthless as a child's worn out toys. In that day the fame, honor, and glory of this world will be worth...

I am always frustrated to hear “soul winners” tell people, “Let God be Lord of your life.” My friend, you can’t make God the Lord of your life anymore than you can make water wet. Water is wet because that is the nature of water. God is King of kings. He is Lord of all because that is His nature. The only thing sinners like us can do is beg God the King to save us by His grace.

“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). There are other important questions. Who is God? What is He like? What is my state before Him? But none are more important than the question of the Philippian jailor: “What must I do to be saved?” Notice what he did not ask: what must I do to save myself? But, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul answered his question, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Then he went on to speak unto him, “The Word of the Lord.” He told him who the Lord Jesus Christ is, what He did, and where He is now! I recently heard a preacher say to his congregation (and I have heard this many times), turn from your sins and trust Christ. While we ought to turn from our sins and never sin again – ...

I Thessalonians 4:1 "Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more."

I ought to love my God and Savior with all my heart, soul and strength. I ought to love my neighbor as much as I love myself. I ought to prefer my brothers and sisters so much over myself, that I would die for them. I ought to pray more. I ought to study the scriptures more. I ought to love my wife, children and grandchildren more. I ought to think on my Savior more and share His Gospel with others more. I ought to complain less and praise more. I ought to bow to all things providential. I ought to forgive more. I ought to walk and...

  1. Grace is always sovereign. “Therefore, hath He mercy on whom He will have mercy, and whom He will He hardeneth” (Romans 9:18).

  2. Grace is always free. “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).

  3. Grace is always saving. “By grace are ye saved” (Ephesians 2:8).

God’s grace is not an offer up for man’s acceptance or rejection. His grace sovereignly, freely saves! We cannot believe grace without believing these three things regarding grace.

When I look at creation, in heaven above and on this earth I must confess, only God can do that. When I look at how such variety is working in such harmony in creation, I must confess, only God can do that. When I hear the gospel of Christ and Him crucified, how Christ was made to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him; how God the Father transferred all the sins of all the elect to God the Son, I must confess, only God can do that. Only God can cause such a transaction. When this sinner thinks of Christ with sweet affections, I must confess, only God can do that. When I think of dying someday and my body buried in the dust and someday God raising it a new body, I must confess, only God can do ...

Numbers 23:21: “He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel”

Every son of Adam is nothing but sin. If we are honest, all we see in ourselves is sin. Then why does God, who sees everything exactly as it is, say that He doesn’t see iniquity in His people? Because HE TOOK THE SIN OF HIS PEOPLE AWAY IN CHRIST. Christ was made sin for His people in such reality that there is no sin left in them – Christ took it all away. The sacrifice of Christ for the sin of His people put their sin away so completely, in such current reality, that there is no iniquity left in them. The Father does not behold iniquity in His people because there is no sin to see – Christ has taken it all away and removed it by the blood of H...

Here is a prayer that God never says no to... “Have mercy upon me.” Whenever someone asks for mercy, they are acknowledging their guilt before God, they are acknowledging His sovereign right to give it or withhold it as He sees fit, and they are pleading their need of mercy. Everybody who truly pleads for mercy will have it. If you say, “I asked the Lord for mercy and He did not give it to me,” then you really never asked for mercy. You may have used the word “mercy”, but that is not what you meant. Because if you meant what the Bible means by mercy, you would have it! The Lord did say, “Him that cometh to Me, I will in no wise cast out.” If you are not received in mercy by Him, it is because you never came to Him for mercy in the first pla...

Romans 5:14 "Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come."

Infants, dying in infancy, the Spirit of God tells us have not sinned “after the similitude of Adam’s transgression.” They, like all the human race, sinned in our father Adam. But God the Holy Ghost tells us plainly – “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father” (Ezekiel 18:20). It is obvious then that dying infants, having committed no offence of their own, are chosen, redeemed, and born again by the grace of God, and must be saved.

These, is equally obvious, will constitute the great bulk of Christ’s kingd...

Here I stand, I can do no other! Let others wave, compromise, or cover; but I preach what Spurgeon, Luther, Calvin, Augustine, Paul, the apostles, and the prophets preached; "Salvation is of the Lord."

Christ died in the stead of His people; and, as God is just, He will not and cannot punish one soul of Adam’s race for whom Christ died. There is not one sin in the book of God against any believer. Our sins were laid on Him, the law is honored, the justice of God satisfied; and, inasmuch as sin condemned Him, sin cannot condemn us!

This is my hope, comfort, and my security; that all my sins, transgressions, and iniquities were atoned for before they were even committed! This, indeed, is good news for the...
