Mark 9:24 "Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief”

I really believe that Christ is all in salvation and yet I constantly look within for evidences of salvation. I really believe that God is sovereign and yet I worry and complain. I really believe that God is the first cause of all things, yet I can harbor anger and resentment. I really desire likeness to Christ, yet I still have a desire for sin. Why these contradictions? Because I have two natures - the nature of the first birth and the nature of the second birth. One that always believes; one thatnever believes. One that always sins, one that never sins. These two natures operating in my one consciousness. Hence my cry, “Lord, I believe, help Thou mine unbelief.”

John 13:13 “Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.”

I question today’s easy believism which obligates God but does not glorify God; which designates Jesus Christ as Saviour but denies Him His Lordship. Rolfe Barnard used to say, “Don’t talk to me so much about your Saviour, but tell me who your Lord is. SOMEBODY IS YOUR LORD! Whoever your Lord is, his servant you are!”

What do we say to our generation? “Accept Jesus as your Saviour?” It’s hard to find anyone who HAS NOT already done that! Or do we say, “Cease from self and bow to the claims of the Lord Jesus Christ?” It is hard to find anyone who HAS done that! Christ will be LORD OF ALL!

Mark 8:36 "...and lose his own soul."

No man can describe the loss of the soul as he should. No man can paint this dreadful picture in its true colors. You and I will never fully understand what it means to lose one's soul until we pass through the valley of death and wake up in eternity. Then, and not until then, shall we know the value of the soul. The value of things will change greatly in that day. The hour is coming when money, bank notes, and bonds will be worth no more than waste paper. The day is coming when our diamonds, silver, and gold, will be as dust in the streets. The day will dawn when houses and lands will be as worthless as a child's worn out toys. In that day the fame, honor, and glory of this world will be worth...

I am always frustrated to hear “soul winners” tell people, “Let God be Lord of your life.” My friend, you can’t make God the Lord of your life anymore than you can make water wet. Water is wet because that is the nature of water. God is King of kings. He is Lord of all because that is His nature. The only thing sinners like us can do is beg God the King to save us by His grace.

“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). There are other important questions. Who is God? What is He like? What is my state before Him? But none are more important than the question of the Philippian jailor: “What must I do to be saved?” Notice what he did not ask: what must I do to save myself? But, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul answered his question, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Then he went on to speak unto him, “The Word of the Lord.” He told him who the Lord Jesus Christ is, what He did, and where He is now! I recently heard a preacher say to his congregation (and I have heard this many times), turn from your sins and trust Christ. While we ought to turn from our sins and never sin again – ...

I Thessalonians 4:1 "Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more."

I ought to love my God and Savior with all my heart, soul and strength. I ought to love my neighbor as much as I love myself. I ought to prefer my brothers and sisters so much over myself, that I would die for them. I ought to pray more. I ought to study the scriptures more. I ought to love my wife, children and grandchildren more. I ought to think on my Savior more and share His Gospel with others more. I ought to complain less and praise more. I ought to bow to all things providential. I ought to forgive more. I ought to walk and...

  1. Grace is always sovereign. “Therefore, hath He mercy on whom He will have mercy, and whom He will He hardeneth” (Romans 9:18).

  2. Grace is always free. “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).

  3. Grace is always saving. “By grace are ye saved” (Ephesians 2:8).

God’s grace is not an offer up for man’s acceptance or rejection. His grace sovereignly, freely saves! We cannot believe grace without believing these three things regarding grace.

When I look at creation, in heaven above and on this earth I must confess, only God can do that. When I look at how such variety is working in such harmony in creation, I must confess, only God can do that. When I hear the gospel of Christ and Him crucified, how Christ was made to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him; how God the Father transferred all the sins of all the elect to God the Son, I must confess, only God can do that. Only God can cause such a transaction. When this sinner thinks of Christ with sweet affections, I must confess, only God can do that. When I think of dying someday and my body buried in the dust and someday God raising it a new body, I must confess, only God can do ...

Numbers 23:21: “He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel”

Every son of Adam is nothing but sin. If we are honest, all we see in ourselves is sin. Then why does God, who sees everything exactly as it is, say that He doesn’t see iniquity in His people? Because HE TOOK THE SIN OF HIS PEOPLE AWAY IN CHRIST. Christ was made sin for His people in such reality that there is no sin left in them – Christ took it all away. The sacrifice of Christ for the sin of His people put their sin away so completely, in such current reality, that there is no iniquity left in them. The Father does not behold iniquity in His people because there is no sin to see – Christ has taken it all away and removed it by the blood of H...

Here is a prayer that God never says no to... “Have mercy upon me.” Whenever someone asks for mercy, they are acknowledging their guilt before God, they are acknowledging His sovereign right to give it or withhold it as He sees fit, and they are pleading their need of mercy. Everybody who truly pleads for mercy will have it. If you say, “I asked the Lord for mercy and He did not give it to me,” then you really never asked for mercy. You may have used the word “mercy”, but that is not what you meant. Because if you meant what the Bible means by mercy, you would have it! The Lord did say, “Him that cometh to Me, I will in no wise cast out.” If you are not received in mercy by Him, it is because you never came to Him for mercy in the first pla...

Romans 5:14 "Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come."

Infants, dying in infancy, the Spirit of God tells us have not sinned “after the similitude of Adam’s transgression.” They, like all the human race, sinned in our father Adam. But God the Holy Ghost tells us plainly – “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father” (Ezekiel 18:20). It is obvious then that dying infants, having committed no offence of their own, are chosen, redeemed, and born again by the grace of God, and must be saved.

These, is equally obvious, will constitute the great bulk of Christ’s kingd...

Here I stand, I can do no other! Let others wave, compromise, or cover; but I preach what Spurgeon, Luther, Calvin, Augustine, Paul, the apostles, and the prophets preached; "Salvation is of the Lord."

Christ died in the stead of His people; and, as God is just, He will not and cannot punish one soul of Adam’s race for whom Christ died. There is not one sin in the book of God against any believer. Our sins were laid on Him, the law is honored, the justice of God satisfied; and, inasmuch as sin condemned Him, sin cannot condemn us!

This is my hope, comfort, and my security; that all my sins, transgressions, and iniquities were atoned for before they were even committed! This, indeed, is good news for the...

To receive Christ as our Lord is to bow to His will. To walk with Christ is to walk with Him “who worketh all things after the counsel of HIS OWN WILL.” To plan my day is to say, “If the Lord will, we shall do this.” To pray is to “ask anything according to HIS WILL.”

If you persist in working with the hope of being saved by your doing, let me warn you one more time that you are running after a scheme which God has solemnly declared He will never accept. “By the deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified in His sight.”

Hebrews 6:19 "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil."

On a recent trip to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands to visit our friends, Daniel (Moose) and Sandy Parks, a coastguard ship was anchored off shore right in front of where my wife Teresa and I were staying. As we observed the ship several times during the day, the front of the ship would be pointing in different directions depending on how the wind was blowing. Yet the ship was never moved from its anchored position. Child of God, it is the same with our souls that are anchored to Christ. What great hope we have of never being moved from faith in our Savior. The Holy Spirit (the wind and breath of God) mov...

Three days before he was killed at Airsmoss because of the gospel he preached, Pastor Richard Cameron preached from Psalm 46 and made this statement: "Be still and know that I am God. This text forbids us to quarrel or murmur against God. All of us need to be afraid of this. Beware of it; for it is a dreadful thing to find fault with God's dealings with us or to say unto Him, 'What doest Thou?' It is a good account of Aaron that when God destroyed his sons, AARON HELD HIS PEACE. Let us then (while we bear the yoke) sit still and keep silence and put our mouth in the dust. God gives no account of His matters to anyone. There are so many things we cannot see through nor understand; but the Lord is our refuge and strength, a very present ...

There are many things I do not understand. However, I do understand that God’s ways are higher than my ways, and his thoughts are higher than my thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). With the mind I have now I cannot think on such a high level. But I understand that God is infinite in wisdom and knowledge. Almighty God can do no wrong for He is light and in Him is no darkness at all. I know that He does all things for His glory and the good of His children. I know how God can be a just God and a Savior through the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ. I know that someday all God’s children shall have the mind of Christ perfectly (I Corinthians 2:16) and then shall they understand clearly.

“Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not no...

Genesis 27:27 “And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed.”

There is, without a doubt, no clearer picture or type of the blessing of God Almighty to an unworthy rebel than the blessing of Jacob by his father Isaac. Jacob had exhibited the true nature of a wretched sinner. In Jacob’s mind, the only way he could get his father’s blessing was to impersonate his brother Esau. Lying with every breath, Jacob attempted to convince his father that he was someone else. Not until Isaac smelled the coat of Esau did he bestow the blessing. The smell of his first born satisfied the aging Isaac.

And just as the smell of...

Even though trouble is laid upon you, it is not as heavy as it could be nor as severe as they would be if the Lord was pleased to deal with you in justice rather than mercy. Therefore, "Wait upon the Lord for they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint" (Isaiah 40:31).

Matthew 26:42 "O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done."

Christ asked this three times. God did not remove the cup. But God sent an angel from heaven which strengthened him. So now when we are like Paul, praying three times for God to remove our thorn in the flesh, Christ, having fully experienced both the weakness of our flesh and the sufficiency of God’s grace, speaks into our hearts, “My grace is sufficient for thee, for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
