Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

The “Experts” tell us that the way to build our children's self-esteem is by telling them how wonderful they are (even when they're bad), always rewarding them (even when they are lazy); and withholding discipline (even when they disrespect authority). It should be no surprise that we have raised a generation of self-absorbed brats with an entitlement mentality. Truth is, self-esteem is the by-product of good decisions, hard work, and showing a genuine interest in and respect for others. Teach your children by example, precept, and correction to choose right over wrong, to respect others (especially authority), and to work hard. Then, they will grow up feeling good about themselves. Parenting is hard work. It will keep you on your knees. Re...

This week a woman asked me a question I rarely, if ever, have been asked. She asked, “What is different about your religion from all the other religions in the world?” What a good question! My answer to her was this, “The gospel of God’s sovereign grace in Christ Jesus is the one message out of all religions in the world that declares God does it all. Every other religion, not matter if it calls itself Christianity or something entirely different, puts a work in the sinner's hand for salvation. The gospel declares salvation is of the LORD: God chose whom he will save, the Son came in human flesh and accomplished their redemption from sin, Christ brings the gospel in truth to each one, the Holy Spirit regenerates them, gives them faith and r...

True salvation is not to be found through the mere reception of any creed, however true or scriptural. Mere 'head notion' is not the road to heaven. "You must be born again," means a great deal more than that you must believe certain dogmas.

The study of the Bible cannot save you! You must press beyond this; you must come to the living, personal Christ, or else your acceptance of the soundest creed cannot avail for the salvation of your soul. Salvation lies in Jesus only!

John 5:39-40 "You search the Scriptures because you believe they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to Me so that I can give you this eternal life."

The best sermons are the sermons which are most full of Christ.

A sermon without Christ....

it is an awful, a horrible thing;

it is an empty well;

it is a cloud without rain;

it is a tree twice dead, plucked by the roots.

It is an abominable thing to give men stones for bread, and scorpions for eggs, and yet they do so who preach not Jesus.

A sermon without Christ! As well talk of a loaf of bread without any flour in it. How can it feed the soul?

Men die and perish because Christ is not there, and yet His glorious gospel is the easiest thing to preach, and the sweetest thing to preach; there is most variety in it, there is more attractiveness in it than in all the world besides!

You say you are unworthy of the least of God’s mercies. Aren’t you glad Christ is worthy and that the redemption He accomplished was for the unworthy? You say you have no goodness or merits to claim. Aren’t you thankful God accepts sinners based upon the goodness and merits of His Son? You say the law affords you no hope. Right you are, but the gospel declares that the mercy and grace of God is freely given to sinners because of the doing and the dying of His dear Son! This is the only salvation worth having and the only one worthy to be proclaimed. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

I notice that few preachers and writers use the expression “OUR LORD JESUS” or “THE LORD JESUS.” It is “Jesus said this” and “Jesus did that” or “Jesus died and rose again.” Brethren, HE IS THE LORD – HE IS THE LIVING GOD!

We need to acknowledge His deity, His dominion, and His divine anointing! He is “God over all, blessed forever” and we can never praise Him too much, speak too reverently of Him, or give Him a high title which He does not deserve.

You may feel that I am straining at a gnat but I sincerely do not think so. As for this preacher and this congregation, He is our LORD JESUS CHRIST and I shall continue to discourage any over-familiarity or lack of reverence for His person and work.

The sin of Lot’s wife was looking back. Her heart was still in Sodom and Gomorra. The believer’s heart is to always be looking to Christ, always pressing forward toward the mark; and Christ is that mark we press forward to (Philippians 3:14). We do not look with desire to go back as the children of Israel did so many times when trouble came. But we keep moving forward till we reach home. “And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward” (Exodus 14:15).

Mark 1:40 "And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean."

There are TWO words that are commonly used day in and day out in the English language that should never follow the word “God” in a sentence. The first word is “want” (wanting, wanted), and the second is “try” (trying, tried).

God has never wanted to do anything that He did not do. God has never tried to do anything that He has not accomplished. God does not want to save sinners. He saves sinners. God is not trying to save sinners, He will have mercy and compassion on whom He will (Romans 9:15). May God truly teach us what He taught the begging leper. That poor fellow had a great need and h...

Prayer is not just saying some words, some prayers cannot even be uttered with words but groans. Prayer is an attitude, it is communion with God all day, every day.

John Chapman

“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for
this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (I Thessolonians 5:16-18).

What Free Will Denies

Before we can see what free will denies, we first have to know what is meant by free will. Free will says that a man’s destiny is dependent upon the choice he makes. His will is free to choose to allow God to save him, or reject God’s offer of salvation. His eternal destiny is determined by his free will.

If I believe my will is free, there are three things I deny. I deny that God is sovereign. I say His sovereignty does not extend to my will. That is a complete denial of His sovereignty. I deny that I am a sinner in the Biblical definition of the word. According to the Bible, men are dead in sins (Ephesians 2:1). That means they are completely unable to do anything to save themselves. Free will is a denial of that. Free...

Charles H. Spurgeon once presided at a meeting in which a young preacher was asked to speak. He began by saying that he was a poor speaker and all he knew was the “A.B.C. Gospel”. He went on to say:

“A” stands for the text we should all learn first as it is the very beginning of “All have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.”

“B” stands for “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.”

“C” is “Come unto me all ye that labour and are heaven laden and I will give you rest.”

When the young preacher sat down, Spurgeon, with tears streaming down his cheeks, said, “Stick to that kind of preaching and you will be a real A.B.C. – ‘Able Bodied Christian.’”

We did not ask God to elect us. We did not ask God to make a covenant of grace. We did not ask God to redeem us by the blood of His Son. All of these things were done before we were born.

Those who believe the doctrines of sovereign grace often act inconsistently with their own principles--when they are angry at the defects of others.

A company of travelers fall into a pit; one of them gets a passerby to draw him out. Now he should not be angry with the rest for falling in; nor because they are not yet out, as he is. He did not pull himself out. Instead, therefore, of reproaching them--he should show them pity.

In the same way, a truly saved man will no more despise others--than blind Bartimaeus, after his own eyes were opened, would take a stick and beat every blind man he met! "For who maketh thee to differ from another? And what hast thou that thou didst not receive now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as...

When we read the story of these two men, it is evident that they had much in common. They had the same parents. They were both born and raised outside the garden. Both had received the same religious instructions. Both came to worship and brought offerings to God. But they differed in their understanding of God’s character, the nature of sin, and the way to approach God.

All men and women are much the same. The natural differences are superficial. We may differ in our ACTS of sin, but there is no difference as to the FACT of sin (Romans 3:9-19)!

This difference in understanding led these men to bring different sacrifices to God. Abel, evidently aware of God’s instructions, in faith and godly fear, brought a slain lamb, typical of the blo...

Colossians 4:6 "Let your speech be alway with grace."

This is not just to talk about the grace of God, but our speech should reveal the grace of God.

  1. Speak the truth faithfully and sincerely, without lying, flattery, or exaggeration.
  2. Speak in love, avoiding gossip, whisperings, or anything that is injurious to the character of another. Avoid sowing discord or division.
  3. Speak kindly and pleasantly. Hard words reveal a hard heart. Unkind, cutting remarks reveal a bitter spirit.

Grace is to the speech what salt is to meat. It makes it acceptable, good to the ear and a blessing to the heart. Grace in the heart will teach you how you ought to answer any person. Knowledge is not acquired by speaking, but it ought to go before it!

We are not desirous of honor, esteem and applause from men, for we are what we are by the grace of God. God can take away what we have as easily as He gave it. We do not despise and provoke one another with our piety; nor do we want to appear wiser, richer in grace, nor more gifted than others; for we are less than the least of the saints. Nor do we envy the gifts, abilities, or grace of another. God will enlighten us, equip us, and bless us as He sees fit to use us.

This is something that our children wonder. It is a good and fair question that we should ask ourselves before our children or anyone else asks us. Do we go to church because that is our habit on Sundays and Wednesdays? Do we go to church to feel better about ourselves? Do we go to church to appear righteous to others? Do we go to church to worship the Lord and be fed from His Word?

The Lord told Moses that children would ask about the Passover: “And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service” (Exodus 12:26)? The Lord gave fathers the answer to give: “It is the sacrifice of the LORD'S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and deliv...

“Someone told me the other day they heard Pastor Scott Richardson say that he had felt himself within spitting distance of hell and worthless as a warm pitcher of spit." That sounds crude to a refined ear but it rings a sure sound in the heart of those who have been taught of God.

How many of us have heard brother Scott make another statement; "the more you convince me of what a great sinner I am, the more you qualify me to cleave to him who came into this world to save sinners."

Law manifests what is in men—sin! Grace manifests what is in God—love! Law demands righteousness from men. Grace brings righteousness to men. Law sentences men to death. Grace brings dead men to life. Law speaks of what I must do. Grace tells me what C...

I once heard someone say, "I am a born worry-wart." This is true of all of us. Whatever failure or sin we have, we are born with it. But since we have been born again in Christ by the grace of God, we have certain qualities and graces we did not have before. One of these graces is TRUST. We trust our Heavenly Father as a small child trusts his earthly father. Our Heavenly Father loves us much more than we are capable of loving our children, and He has all power and authority over any demon or danger we may encounter! A natural father does not have such power and is limited in his ability to protect or care for the child of his love. Do you and I not realize that no person, no power, no disease, no death can touch one of His o...

The good news from heaven to lost sinners, that glorious gospel of salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ, is not a message of God’s hopeful expectation to save, but of a salvation purposed and accomplished. It is not a message of Jesus Christ knocking at the door of the sinner’s heart, hoping to gain an entrance, but of His determination and ability to give a new heart to whom He will. It is not a message of the Holy Spirit striving with the sinner’s natural will, hoping to influence him to decide for Jesus, but of His purpose and ability to make sinner’s willing, causing them to flee to the Lord Jesus Christ (See II Timothy 1:9; Psalm 110:3; John 17:2; Isaiah 53:11).
