Scriptures Alone! Grace Alone! Christ Alone!

By: Lantana Grace Church | January 15, 2019

There is not a preacher—living or dead—with whom you cannot find fault, either in what he says, what he writes, or what he does. Perfection is only found in our Lord. “I find no fault in him.” His ambassadors, however, are human and not only subject to mistakes, but prone to error, except they are kept, led, and taught by the Holy Spirit.

Let us be patient with one another, pray for one another, and look for the good and not the bad. Don’t chew on the briars in a message or an article. Even a donkey knows enough to eat the hay and spit out the briars!

There are many things that are important to us; our families, careers, health, etc. However, there in one thing that surpasses all others and it is my union to Christ. Nothing compares to this. It is the one thing needful above all others. Without Christ I am lost, my life on this earth is vanity, useless, but not so in Christ. In Christ I am loved, redeemed, forgiven, accepted, pardoned and righteous. Let’s never lose sight of what really is important. “But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:42)

I do not come into this pulpit hoping that perhaps somebody will of his own free will return to Christ. My hope lies in another quarter. I hope that my Master will lay hold of some of them, and say, “You are mine, and you shall be mine. I claim you for myself.” My hope arises from the freeness of grace, and not from the freedom of the will.

Jesus Christ is my Wisdom, Righteousness, Sanctification and Redemption. He is all my Hope, my High Priest, my Sacrifice, my Mediator. His blood is the atonement for my sins. He is my Lord and my God. Jesus Christ is all I need to stand in God’s presence accepted. It does not get any better than this.

The same man who said: “I be nothing” (II Corinthians 12:11) said: “Christ is all” (Colossians 3:11)! Every true child of God enters in to what the apostle said, and totally agrees! I am the chief sinner; He is the Chief Shepherd and Savior of sinners! I am vile and wicked; He is Holy and Just! I am absolute weakness; He is infinite strength! I must decrease; He must increase! I am worthless vanity; He is unsearchable riches! I deserve wrath; He deserves Honor! I deserve DEATH; He deserves GLORY! I AM NOTHING; and CHRIST IS ALL!

But do you know what the glory of the gospel is? He traded places with me.

Much of today’s preaching has to do with making Christ our savior. If God is pleased to save us, it will be God the Father who made Him our Saviour. It is God who made Christ to be our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption (I Corinthians 1:30). I do not make Christ to be anything: however God the Father made Him to be everything to His people; Christ is our all in all by the power and purpose of God (Colossians 3:11).

Some years ago I was questioned by a group of men at a certain church looking for a pastor. They asked me if I preached messages against abortion. I replied, “Christ is my message.” They replied, “We know that.” Again they asked, “Do you preach messages against rock and roll.” I replied, Christ is my message, they replied, “We know that.” I then replied, “We can get women to quit having abortions, we can get our young people (and older) to quit listening to rock and roll and they will still end up in hell. Only Christ can save sinners from their sins, from the guilt of them, from the reigning power of them, from the condemning power of them. “Give me Christ or else I die.”

Those who have never heard the glorious Gospel of the free grace of God in Christ Jesus the Redeemer, need to hear that Gospel more than anything else in the world, but they , sad to say, do not feel that need. However, those who have heard and believed that Gospel MUST feast upon the Lord Jesus Christ and His righteousness! He knows and feels his desperate need.

I defy anyone to find a solitary text of Scripture in the New Testament that uses the law to motivate, inspire, regulate or even guide the believer. Believers are motivated by love, inspired by gratitude, regulated by grace and guided by the Holy Spirit. The whole Word of God, the complete revelation of His will is our law. Our lives are governed by love, not by fear. We walk by faith, not by legislation. We walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh (Romans 8:9-14; Galatians 3:3).

You don’t have to teach a drowning man what to say. We preach the Gospel and the Holy Ghost will be left to work in men’s hearts. There’s no pressure, no persuasion, and no psychology to get professions, or joiners, or decisions. The preacher will preach the Gospel; he will preach the Word of God and will leave people alone. They will leave them in the hands of the Holy Spirit.

We preach election because there is not a single blessing that comes to us from the hand of our Redeemer that is not stamped with the hand of God’s electing love. The Scriptures say, “God hath blessed us according as He hath chosen us” (Ephesians 1:3-4). Again, “He hath chosen us that we should be holy” (Ephesians 1:4). Again, “The God of our fathers hath chosen thee that thou shouldst know His will” (Acts 22:14). It is not in ourselves that these blessings are contained. We have them because of OUR UNION WITH CHRIST, and we are united with Christ because of the Father’s Divine and Sovereign choice.

The Bible reveals God to be sovereign in creation, providence, and salvation. When men object to God’s sovereignty exercised in election, we do well to point them to the apostle’s words in Romans 9:20-21, “Nay, but, O man, who are you to reply against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump, to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?” Men have been told for so long that God is in their hands, it is no wonder that many are astonished to hear that the Bible says it is just the opposite.

The Lord Jesus is never fully valued until sin is clearly seen. A man must know something of the depth and malignity of his disease in order to love, honor, and appreciate the dear Savior.

The “Experts” tell us that the way to build our children's self-esteem is by telling them how wonderful they are (even when they're bad), always rewarding them (even when they are lazy); and withholding discipline (even when they disrespect authority). It should be no surprise that we have raised a generation of self-absorbed brats with an entitlement mentality. Truth is, self-esteem is the by-product of good decisions, hard work, and showing a genuine interest in and respect for others. Teach your children by example, precept, and correction to choose right over wrong, to respect others (especially authority), and to work hard. Then, they will grow up feeling good about themselves. Parenting is hard work. It will keep you on your knees. Re...

This week a woman asked me a question I rarely, if ever, have been asked. She asked, “What is different about your religion from all the other religions in the world?” What a good question! My answer to her was this, “The gospel of God’s sovereign grace in Christ Jesus is the one message out of all religions in the world that declares God does it all. Every other religion, not matter if it calls itself Christianity or something entirely different, puts a work in the sinner's hand for salvation. The gospel declares salvation is of the LORD: God chose whom he will save, the Son came in human flesh and accomplished their redemption from sin, Christ brings the gospel in truth to each one, the Holy Spirit regenerates them, gives them faith and r...

True salvation is not to be found through the mere reception of any creed, however true or scriptural. Mere 'head notion' is not the road to heaven. "You must be born again," means a great deal more than that you must believe certain dogmas.

The study of the Bible cannot save you! You must press beyond this; you must come to the living, personal Christ, or else your acceptance of the soundest creed cannot avail for the salvation of your soul. Salvation lies in Jesus only!

John 5:39-40 "You search the Scriptures because you believe they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to Me so that I can give you this eternal life."

The best sermons are the sermons which are most full of Christ.

A sermon without Christ....

it is an awful, a horrible thing;

it is an empty well;

it is a cloud without rain;

it is a tree twice dead, plucked by the roots.

It is an abominable thing to give men stones for bread, and scorpions for eggs, and yet they do so who preach not Jesus.

A sermon without Christ! As well talk of a loaf of bread without any flour in it. How can it feed the soul?

Men die and perish because Christ is not there, and yet His glorious gospel is the easiest thing to preach, and the sweetest thing to preach; there is most variety in it, there is more attractiveness in it than in all the world besides!

You say you are unworthy of the least of God’s mercies. Aren’t you glad Christ is worthy and that the redemption He accomplished was for the unworthy? You say you have no goodness or merits to claim. Aren’t you thankful God accepts sinners based upon the goodness and merits of His Son? You say the law affords you no hope. Right you are, but the gospel declares that the mercy and grace of God is freely given to sinners because of the doing and the dying of His dear Son! This is the only salvation worth having and the only one worthy to be proclaimed. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

I notice that few preachers and writers use the expression “OUR LORD JESUS” or “THE LORD JESUS.” It is “Jesus said this” and “Jesus did that” or “Jesus died and rose again.” Brethren, HE IS THE LORD – HE IS THE LIVING GOD!

We need to acknowledge His deity, His dominion, and His divine anointing! He is “God over all, blessed forever” and we can never praise Him too much, speak too reverently of Him, or give Him a high title which He does not deserve.

You may feel that I am straining at a gnat but I sincerely do not think so. As for this preacher and this congregation, He is our LORD JESUS CHRIST and I shall continue to discourage any over-familiarity or lack of reverence for His person and work.

The sin of Lot’s wife was looking back. Her heart was still in Sodom and Gomorra. The believer’s heart is to always be looking to Christ, always pressing forward toward the mark; and Christ is that mark we press forward to (Philippians 3:14). We do not look with desire to go back as the children of Israel did so many times when trouble came. But we keep moving forward till we reach home. “And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward” (Exodus 14:15).
